Here is my Renegade after GM 1-70" tw barrel, Lyman 57SML sight, and spirit level front sight installed. Also, look at the wood I found under the orange shellac that was on the rifle, pretty nice for a $150 frontstuffer that has been in the woods for over 30 yrs I think.

Nice work, fella. I hunt with a Renegade every year & mine is getting a little beat up, so I probably should get rid of what's left of the original wood finish and do something like you've done. I also like your sling! Is it hooked to the rear portion of the trigger guard in back? How about the front? I can't tell from the picture.I'm sure I won't do a sight replacement. The most modern I get is to put a little dayglo orange paint on the front sight for very low light conditions. The .54 is a good deer gun, though. When I shot a 6 point several years ago, it knocked him right down and rolled him.
The barrel length is also good for brush, etc. I'm building a flint longrifle now with a looooong barrel, and I plan on hunting with it. It's going to take getting used to after walking around with the ol' Renegade!

I must say I apologize.

I just saw a post on this forum that asked to not post pics of themes or such that was not period correct for this forum. It gave a cut off date of 1865. I am quite sure that my Renegade with sights is not period correct for that time period. I am also quite sure that if I do any reenacting, it will be Civil War, so I may fit in one day, just not today.

I love to shoot black powder guns of all types. So much so, it is sometimes called an obsession with me. Maybe sometime soon I will own a flintlock, and have clothes and all the trimmings to be part of a "living history". However, today, I choose to spend my available funds on guns and machine equipment.

I will refrain from posting unless it is something that fits the criteria listed by the forum "powers that be".

Hey your gun looks like mine! I built the first one two years ago. The next two I built last year. This one was built last year. I am no expert but I think your front sight is on backwards. Good looking rifle! Ron Ron

Thanks for the reply Idaho,

No offense, but the front sight is on exactly as I intended it to be. I can see the aperture falling out in the dirt with the rifle standing in the rack if it was installed the opposite way.

David,

The Guidelines for Photos asks to limit posts to designs and styles found prior to 1865. Your rifle definately fits into that catagory. Don't refrain from posting about it because of the sights. GW

Jaeger,

I will take closer photo's of the sling mounts and post them. The front is in a thimble, and the rear is moved closer to the hand guard and is in the stock similar to factory placement. I had to move everything foward because of the increased barrel length.

Greywhiskers,

Thanks, I really have learned a lot from this forum and I want to fit in. I was worried that strict enforcement of the forum's policies would exclude me, and the last thing I want to do is start a ruckus.

How did you treat your stock? I have a Renegade on which I would like to refinish the stock. I really like the looks of your stock. Thanks for the pictures.

El Lobo,

I stripped with steel wool and Formby's Furniture Refinisher. Then I steamed out a few dents and rubbed with Tru Oil by Birchwood Casey. I let it dry til almost hard, then I rub with steel wool soaked in tru oil again, hang to dry, and when very close to completely dry, same process again, then I wipe it down with a good wood oil finish like Old English. Oh yeah, I wipe each time with steel wool using plenty of elbow grease. Wahlah!

Good Luck! David B

That is a nice looking Renegade. I like how you placed the rear stud behind the trigger guard.

I do have a question about the sights. Is that level part of the globe sight, or is it added on, because I can't see how you would be able to use it if the front sight were reversed. Also, how do the apertures fit in the sight if you're worried about losing one?

Again, nice rifle. I like the late target rifle look.

I would agree that apologies are not required here.

Very interesting rifle, I could stare at the wood in that stock all day. nice work!

Thanks for the post!

The stock looks good.
It's similar to the way I finished my do-over Renegade's wood.
Instead of Tru-Oil, I used a Tung oil mixture.

It looks like the same sight as mine. It would be a lee shavers. It comes with the level and it is removable. What I meant was the globe part is backwards from all the other globe sites I have seen mounted, the level is mounted correct. If it works for him that is all that matters. He changes the inserts when the gun is butt down. I change mine when the gun is level. Ron
