Does anybody know if replacement (iron) sights are available for the Traditions Deer Hunter. I never really liked the optic sights, and found out how fragile they are today.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Dave

My wife has a Traditions Deerhunter that we put a set of Fire sights on. They work good, but I still prefer the Lyman sights with the white bead that are on my Lyman rifles.

Your Traditions probably has the european dovetail cut that is .360 inch or thereabouts. The modern sight set made by Lyman may fit. A triangular file and some patience and you could open up the dovetail to .375 and fit an american sight from Track of the Wolf.......Be careful with that file. Some people grind one side of the file to keep from cutting the dovetail deeper as they are widening it. And I'm not sure if the angle of the triangular file is quite correct for a standard dovetail, but its close........................Bob

The included angle of a triangular file is 60 degrees which is the standard angle for sight dovetails.

Grinding or, "killing" one surface of the triangular file can be considered a requirement for a dovetailing file. The last thing a person wants is to have the file removing material from areas that are fine as they are.
As Leatherbark said most people "grind" the teeth off of one surface but if one doesn't have access to a grinder, any oilstone or whetstone will dull up the files teeth to the point that they won't cut metal.

I would suggest that if any filing is to be done, it should be done to the base of the sight.
This goes along with the old rule, "Always modify the least expensive part."

Wisdom if it was ever heard. Don't make the rifle fit make the sight fit.

Thanks for the replies fellas'.

If they were dovetail sights I think I could figure something out. Not quite that easy. The sights bolt on. They fit the octagonal barrel and are held on with what appears to be #8 or 10 screws.

I called Deer Creek Products yesterday and the owner there told me that he had some sights on the way from Europe that he thought MIGHT fit.

I'm not sure what style of sights I'm going to end up with, but I've got a feeling I'll be able to use the advice on proper use of a file!!

Thanks again,

Dave

I think my front sight is in a dovetail on the deerhunter. The back is held on with screws.
