I am looking at refitting my 54 cal. t/c. I have collected the steel parts for browning and am working on them as we speak. Now I am starting to think of the barrel. This will be a hunting firearm so my question is do I go with a GM ball barrel or conical barrel. I don't worry that much about distance, maybe 75 yards but I do consider performance.

It's been my experience that TC factory 1:48" twists are very accurate with patched round balls...mine shoot 1.75" to 2.75" groups at 100yds from the bench using the following deer hunting load:

90grns Goex 3F
Oxyoke wonderwad
.018" TC prelubed pillow ticking patches
Hornady .530's

Even without rifling .54's are great...just took a couple bucks in November with a .54cal Flint Smoothbore

The notion that 1:48's don't shoot PRB's accurately is an old wives tale, proven incorrect over and over by shooters for decades...
