Hi Guys Help...
What pistol would a loyist unit carry during th rev. war? Who makes a good replica of it... That's alll just a question to my experts... thanks loyalist Dawg :hatsoff:

I would think that the only guys who would be normally outfitted with pistols would be cavalry units (though I could be totally wrong :haha: ). Given that, and the fact that they would have most likely been outfitted with English guns, I say one of these two would have been a strong possibility:
Heavy Dragoon
Light Dragoon

I saw the movie "The Patriot" with Mel Gibson, and came away with the impression that whatever pistols they used, they must have been issued with a bushel of ramrods! :rotf:

Oh yeah, like "The Patriot" came close!!! :rotf:

Actually, pistols would be a cavalry weapon, at least for the most part. Don't think many ground-pounders, reguardless of who's side they were on, felt compelled to drag around extra weight.

I agree,Dragoons both light and heavy would have carried holster pistols sometimes called "horse pistols" usually in pairs, some officers would have brought their own again often in pairs and these would have been belt pistols the quality of which depended on their affluency. A very few would have had Kentucky pistols but these would have been rare.I suspect the above would have applied to both sides with the Kentucky pistols limited to those areas where the Kentucky rifles were made.

Aside from the issued pistols in dragoon, cavalry and the highland units, the same people were carrying pistols that were carrying the light officers fussels that everyone is so fond of.

Officers

The extra weight of a pistol was usually not an issue since officers, from platoon to regiment and in every branch of the army, rode whenever possible.

I agree that pistols just weren't that common for the average soldier during the Rev war... but let me throw out some research for your general consideration: I'm currently finishing my master's thesis on the road (trail?) system in the Southern Appalchians before 1800 (Ok, some of you will find that fascinating, the other 90% will say "why?"... s'ok, I'm used to it by now!) Much of this involves tracking down primary sources of travelers, hunters, settlers etc., and I have come across references to pistols far more than expected. Normally when doing living history events and portraying a settler in this area I don't include a pistol as part of my kit, but based on what I've found I may start including one occasionally... I still don't think that they were really common, but based on the pre-1800 first person accounts FOR THIS AREA, they weren't exactly rare either. Keep in mind these weren't soldiers, just the average folks in this area: settlers, hunters and circut riders for the most part. Sorry, exactly zero references so far as to what kind of pistols they were...
