Some here may not realize it, but there was a way of adding color to powder horns in Colonial America in which ink or other color pigment was applied to the engraving. This horn is an example of such a horn inspired from a Revolutionary War powder horns using poly-chrome finish.

Are you talking about the base plug strap staple? If you are, it is made with heavy gage wire.

what diameter is the wire? I have all sorts of pin stock, or I could just work a nail down? Thank you
 
don't know what Rick uses ... I will (of course) defer to his judgment in any phase or detail of horn making, inasmuch as he is the undisputed master. While I crawl on my belly, he soars as would an eagle.

I use bits of coat hanger wire, but I would guess that a bit of nail would serve as well or better.
