I use bits of coat hanger wire

I just scored a bazillion hangers at a thrift store I swung by today. I almost feel guilty cutting them up because I am sure that I now own one of every type of metal hanger ever made in the world.

Wire coat hangers will work OK, but I like to use wire that is a little thicker and buy it at the hardware store in 36" lengths. You have to watch the diameter of coat hangers, as there are some very thin wire used out there and are pretty flimsy. That is the main reason I don't use them anymore.

Note! My advice is those that like those twisted wire strap staples should think twice if they are wanting to produce a more accurate historic themed powder horn. I have yet to see any original powder horns having a twisted strap staple. Why? Those twisted staples might look OK on a bare horn that is going to be set on the mantle, but in reality, that twist in the wire is covered up when the strap is used and even might cause some wear to the strap.

what that fella said ...

and, by the way, I don't twist the wire any more because it appeared to me that a bit of wire (even if hidden by the strap) was sort of like engraving the inside of the lock plate - it looks cool, but only if you have Superman's X-Ray vision.

I do notice that thinner coathanger wire, so I keep an eye out for the thicker stuff ... the hard ware store has some good stuff, and if they don't, I drag all the way to the next state to find a good hobby store.
