You don't list all of the particulars of the recovery of this property. But, given what you have posted, if the weapon was not recovered by the police, it needs to be taken to them. About the only thing that can be done is to run the serial number thru NCIC (National Crime Information Center) and see if that number comes up as stolen. Only the police can do this. A longer shot, and maybe possible given relatively small number of this type of handgun that are actually stolen, is to float an NCIC regional message (statewide or S.E. - U.S.) letting all other member police agencies know of the recovery and whom to contact if they have something of that sort missing. Sadly since most people do not record their serial numbers, even on guns, once they are stolen it is almost impossible for them to be returned to their rightful owner if recovered, especially if they are recovered outside of the jurisdiction where they were stolen. On a brighter note, if you are the person who recovered it and you turn it over to the police, most state laws say the property then becomes yours after some period of time if it is not claimed. Good idea to post the info. on sites like this like you have.
