I have been looking to upgrade my Cap&Ball revolvers. I have a Navy Arms 58 and a AMI 1860. I had decided on a Colt Second Generation 1851 Navy or 1860 Army. After looking on Gun Broker and missing a couple I am looking at others now. Ubert's Seems to be the best thought of but then you get the Cimmeron's and Taylor's that are supposed to be cherry picked. One other thing! If I go with the 1860 I would like the Civilian version without the shoulder stock cut outs. Cimmeron has one but I have found no 1860 Navy's without them.

So my question is what would you do if a shooter Colt doesn't come around soon? Thank's in advance! Geo. T.

I have Uberti and 2nd Gen Colts. Ubertis are fine replicas. Now I will get seriously flamed here but many of the latest Gen Colts were built with Uberti contracted parts..... :surrender:

Also the Uberti Civilian model is one of the only Ubertis "that never was" models. I have searched but have never found an original 1860 with a brass back stap. The Uberti civilians were my first C&B pistols and I just recently changed to steel backstraps to keep them HC. The 3 screw model was out there but with steel backstrap....

I'd try to work a Pietta 1858 Remington with 5.5" barrel into the plans somehow. They're very well made, though not historically perfect. If you catch a sale at Cabela's, the price tag will be under $200...and the gun steel framed.

You should have something nice to shoot while that Colt is "coming around".

The newer Ubertis and Piettas are good guns but Colt is definitely a step up. All the 2nd and 3rd generation guns were built with imported parts but they are better fit and finished with real case colors. The story has always been that Cimarron has their own QC people at the Uberti factory and thus, fewer turds get through. After buying and selling a dozen or so of them and handling many more, I really can't see a difference between them. I've got a perfect Cimarron and had to send another back for replacement. My Taylor's Model P is also very good. Still, I'd rather handle a Uberti from any other importer than order one from Cimarron sight unseen. My advice would be to shop for the best price. Later model Piettas are on par with Uberti for quality. Older guns, not so much. Either way, if you can handle and inspect before purchase, that's a plus.

I'd save my money and wait.
Once I figure out what I want, and that can take a looong time,
I wait till I get what I want.

George, I would just work over the guns you have unless you just want to buy higher priced guns.
Usually these reproductions are made of equally good steel and can be worked over an in many cases made better than production guns no matter who made them.
It is amazing what can be done to some of these inexpensive guns to make them shoot and look like there more expensive cousins and you will have the pride of having done it yourself.MD
