When I got it I was 19 years younger. It must have gotten heavier over the years? :rotf:

That's what Rice said...I wonder why they're not more common...

Depending on from were people are buying (manufactured or custom) and what they are buying the rifle for. Most of them I build are for hunting & I get more calls for round or radius cut rifling.

I know that out of the last 20 rifles I built, only 2 had straight cut rifling, all the others were round bottom rifled....... I have over 40 barrels in stock, & from Tuesdays inventory of them only 4 have straight cut rifling, the rest of the are radius cut or round bottom rifled.(less one smoothy & one doublebarrel) Rice calls it a radius cut, Colerain calls it a round bottom. They are a different cut, but are similar & both clean easy.

I was surprised at the groove depth of .016" being required...I assume the deeper grooves are needed for a better patch grab without the square corners?

Have you talked to anyone about a blank ?
If not I would give Wayne Dunlap a call

Well, with the economy being what it is...and hearing that Home Depot is closing some stores...figured I could get some 2x6's at a cheap price...hand pick them for good grain of course...a couple kiln dried, a couple pressure treated...if I mess one up I'll have a spare, etc.

Call RICE to order a 42" swamped D-weight .58cal
Out of stock, two month wait because he's making .38" barrels for the next several weeks !
Bill, I know what you are going through.... about 6-8 weeks ago I ordered a 42" Beck profile swamped .58 and was told they were out of stock and it would be mid-February before they ran some of that pattern. Since this may well be my last barrel I wanted the best, so guess I'll just wait! Emery

So does this man the Rice barrel I just bought is some sort of sub-standard quality...I thought I was buying a top brand...

I think you did buy one of the best. I think he was refering to what he wanted in a barrel length and he is willing to wait for that barrel length. Just like if you had your heart set on a 38cal. and they were out and you would be willing to wait.

Yep, what I meant was that I am willing to wait for that barrel and NOT go with another brand (altho there are some excellent barrel makers out there). Also, the pattern for the Beck swamped barrel is taken directly from an original JP Beck barrel, so is as close to HC as is possible with the exception of being machine made.

We're lucky to have Rice barrels making fine barrels and only having to wait a couple months. Most of the custom barrel makers are at least 9 months behind, and often much more. Admittedly, sometimes they'll make a barrel quicker for a neighbor or friend, but for Joe Blow, it's not uncommon to wait a year and longer.
