I have used several of the Dixie thin leather (suede?) cases with the fringes, all of them dyed a reddish brown.

While they work all right, they do discolor any brass parts that make contact with the leather.

I'm sure many of you wouldn't care but when I make brass mounted longrifles with polished patch boxes etc. it does gripe me to have to re-polish them.

You made these?

$62.75 :shocked2: OUCH!! It is pretty but it is pricy. I make mine with a canvas outer and a blanket inner. The canvas wears well and the blanket both pads the rifle and protects the finish. I can make my rifle cases for LOT less than $62.75.

I do have a leather case similar to yours (no fringe) but it doesn't fit any of my rifles. I got it with a Hatfield rifle that I bought several years ago. The Hatfield is a long skinny rifle and all of my present rifles are too big to fit in the skinny case. Oh well, I'll just hang onto it, maybe one day I will acquire a rifle that fits it.

Mine was an impulse buy in the thinking I'd start going to an occasional event but never did and that itch has long since passed...just sits on a shelf. Felt it was way too nice to use for protection carrying in & out of the woods in the dark during nasty weather...so I made one for hunting out of soft/thick gray boat carpet then a slip-on waterproof cover slides over it.
Doesn't have to be PC/HC walking in to a deer stand in the dark bumping trees, etc, and glad I took that route as my longguns don't have a mark on them.

Zonie...Amazing body of work!

As far as the gun case goes, I have a couple of bags made from old wool, olive drab army blankets that I really like. Got them from Dixon's for I think about $10-$15. I do use the canvas ones that are available from TOTW and like those too but the wool ones are softer, thicker and seem to offer much better protection, and they are also longer. They are great for carrying guns to and from the range.

Just my 2 cents.... Mick :hatsoff:

It may not be HC/PC, but a shoulder strap really helps if you need to carry a bunch of stuff...

Reinforce the tip, so the sights don't poke through the canvas....

You can also make the canvas case loose enough to slide a blanket case inside. That way, if things get wet, you can pull out the lining to dry...

What I like about those wool sleeves is the look HC for just about any period, and the liner material is almost a silk-like. Doesn't catch on tall front/rear sights going in and out. Rick. :hatsoff:

Well, that's kind of the direction I'm leaning. I see them on ebay for $30 or $35 with free shipping. They look good.

How durable are they? Will they hold up to use? Do you know if they wear out faster?

Wow! Zonie, in looking at your work, all I can say is that with a talent like that, The Good Lord has really blessed you. Don't forget to thank Him. :hatsoff:

If we are talking about the same cover...........the wool is nice and just heavy enough to be very durable. I would not hesitate to use it in the field. Actually, I don't know how they do it at that price. I know the first one I received looked exactly like the one pictured. I ordered it from their Web-Site. The owner said they make them there by hand. And the quality of the stitching shows. That's why I ordered two more - in different lengths. Didn't know they were also offering them on Ebay? Rick. :hatsoff:

The price is very good even cheaper than making one your self, having items made out of white canvas is also very HC/PC and it will not cause you to look at your friends in a way you previously thought not possible , any way we are back on your posted topic at least . :haha:

Actually the ones on ebay are not the same as the ones you linked me to. The ones on ebay are made by a company the seller lists as SmithCabin. They are red with black stripes like they are made out of a wool blanket. They have one that is made for a rifle 60" in length and would fit my rifle. My Kentucky is 51" long.

Well guys, I went and bought the one off of ebay. The guy who sells them makes the stuff himself. I'll have to setup a photobucket account someday and start posting pictures of my items. Rifle, possible bag, kit, etc.

Accessories, accessories, accessories. :haha:
