Just read skaguns post about rifle tools and became curious as to what type or style everyone may or maynot carry.

kind of a "show us your rifle tools" thread.

I have two flinters and carry a tool for european military rifles.....

I KNOW..... not pc at all!

when hunting or plinking, I'm not always concerned with the hard way.

The tool I have is out of a tobacco can cleaning kit. It consists of a pin punch (jaw wrench) which can lock into a screwdriver bit for leverage. It is black and small.

like I said, not pc but useful.

I have a little tool roll with a forged turn-screw with a milled cut-out on one edge of the blade for nibbling the flint, a Ted Cash "one drop" oil bottle, a MSM mainspring vise (hex-head cap screw swapped out for a slotted bolt), two vent picks and a long shanked jag. Also in the roll are 12 cleaning patches, five flints, a length of tarred marline and a 1" x 14" leather strap. The latter two are for grip in pulling a stuck rammer.

It tri-folds and a small strap with a 1/2" brass buckle holds it closed.

In the bottom of my shot pouch are three spare flint leathers.

In the patchbox is a tow worm and a ball puller, and a spare button jag. (and one flint and one cast ball, all wrapped in cotton ticking so they don't rattle ... which also serves as an emergency patch source :winking: )

I acquired all of my rifle tools with the idea of doing living history. To the best of my knowlege, they are correct.

I carry 2 hand forged screwdrivers because the lock bolts are different size than the cock jaw screw, a tow worm, and a ball screw. I don't really like the forged screwdrivers that have the shepherd's crook type head. It seems I can never get a good enough grip on them to sufficiently tighten the cock jaw screw. I've been thinking of making one using a piece of antler for the handle. I also keep a primitive iron ball mold in my bullet pouch too, mostly so I know where it is when I want to pour a few balls.

The one modern tool I carry is one of those brass wasp waisted cleaning jags.

here's what's in my pouch: a small screwdriver, a flint knapping tool made out of an old concrete nail...don't use it for knapping anymore (use back edge of patch knife) but keep it for tighten cock, a horse hair brush for pan...never used, a touch hole pick...used a lot, a non pc bottle of Clean bore liqiud, a few swabbing patches, a couple of spare flints...that's about it. I have a whole tool kit in my shooting bench top box, but most of that stuff is "just in case' and is rarely if ever used...Hank
