A few friends and I were having a discussion about rifling and this question came up. What year or time period were bores first rifled? and what twist were the first?

Rifling first appeared in the middle of the 15th century. It was not very useful for military weapons, except for special circumstances, until the invention of the Minie Ball.
 
Originally, the "grooves" were cut into the barrels to give the fouling a place to go, just wide parallel grooves with little or no twist...
