The Jackie Brown Carolina smoothbore i recently got appears to have straight rifling in the bore. I can feel the lands and grooves with my finger and see them going all the way from the muzzle to the breechplug face. Is this going to have any effect on shooting rd. balls or shot? Is this normal for his guns? Have never had a smoothbore with this before. The rifling isn't very deep, maybe .002-003 best i can tell by looking at it. Any info on this would be appreciated. Thanks.

You sure it ain't tooling marks? Sometimes a smoothbore barrel ain't completely smooth till a few hundred balls have been put thru it.
I really doubt if it's rifleing grooves

These are spaced evenly all around the bore. And besides, this gun wasn't new when i bought it, it had been fired quite a bit already. Pretty sure it is straight rifling. I have heard talk about it on here. Anyone got any idea?

I've seen straight rifled barrels before. They are supposed to shoot roundballs better than unrifled barrels, without screwing up shot patterns.

It keeps the shot from spinning and you are suppose to get a better pattern than with a plain smooth bore with birdshot.

Thanks BS and Ridge. I have heard of it, but have never seen it before. I didn't know whether it was standard on Jackies guns, or if someone had it done after buying it. Hope it quits raining here before too long so i can get out and try it out with rd. balls and shot. I need to get a shot load worked up before Turkey season starts April 15.

Thanks Rich. It appears that someone has had it done to this barrel. I hope it was worth whatever it cost them. Maybe i got a better deal than i thought. Course, i hope that the fella i bought it from was aware of the fact. Will have to see how it does with rd. balls and shot when the rain stops.

Jackie Brown uses hydraulic tubing as a barrel in his smoothbores I am told.

Alright have to... couldn't resist... my apologies already, :hmm: Now I'm not the sharpest frog in the drawer but would'nt that make it a rifle? :blah:

Aww, come on Roy, don't be ruinin' it for me. Actually, technically i would say you are correct. Not sure what the right term is for one.

That's ok, i am only trying to find out if it will shoot any better than a plain smoothbore will. Besides, whats wrong with a smooth rifle? I may put a rear sight on it and have a rifled smooth rifle. :rotf:

 I tried one of those WADLANDER bbls in my mod 870,straight rifling, keeps the wad from spinning. I've patterned the WADLANDER and smooth bore, and can't see a difference. Olson

Rifled smoothbore :rotf: Jumbo shrimp :rotf: chicken of the sea :rotf: Military intelligence
Sorry, just couldn't help myself :blah:

Rebel - If it is rifled, I think you should owe me---hmmmm----about 10 times more $$$$. OR at least a Big Mac next time !!-- Bill

Bill, the Big Mac sounds good. I don't know, but it appears to be . You never noticed it? I can feel it with my finger even. Haven't had a chance to shoot it yet. Danged rain. I did get a new liner and replace that. The one in it was over 3/32" and i figured 3f powder was just going to run out of it. Hopefully will be able to shoot it before summer, if this rain ever quits. Want to get it patterned before spring turkey season. Take care.

Rebel, It's doubtful that is rifling. Some Jackie Brown barrels are pretty rough in the bore & are tubing. You could pull the breechplug to get a better look at it.

You never know what someone may have shot out of that barrel too, would steel shot leave marks? :v

Thomas

Thomas, these are not just marks in the bore. They are evenly spaced grooves and ridges, all about the same width, from the muzzle to the breechplug. I can feel them at the muzzle with my finger, and see them going straight down the bore by shining a ight down the bore.
