Any rifles out there for lefties?
We have a family friend who is blind in his right eye. Good safety glasses but to me looks like the nipple would blow out exhaust, smoke, etc towards his remaining good eye.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I believe Lyman Great Plains rifles are still offered in left-hand & maybe their Deerstalker & Trade rifles. besides these, if ya look on gunbroker in the blackpowder/muzzleloader section you'll likely find a few T/C Renegades or New Englanders in lefty as well.

i'm terminally left-handed but all my guns are right-hand T/C's & one Lyman. I tried a left-hand Renegade for a while & it just felt completely foreign to me. only problem I've encountered is sparks to the forearm if I forget to wear long sleeves to the range.

as you've already mentioned, good shooting glasses are yer friend. luck & have a good'en, bubba.

I have a traditions leftie and just got a GPR leftie off gun broker about a month back but still haven't shot it (that should change after our 1.73" of rain today!)

I am right handed and left eyed so know what ya mean about feeling weird. I have 25-30 rifles and all but 2 are rt handed and I have no issues (but the sparked forearm mentioned above).

Me myself, looking for a lefthander to turn into a seriously nipple eatin' long barrel fast twist .52 that won't tattoo my right arm.
Best of luck and low prices on your search!

The Lyman Trade Rifle is only made in right hand, however I shot mine left handed for many years before I got a LH Great Plains rifle.

I am a lefty and far prefer left handed rifles, particularly with muzzle loaders. In a flintlock I would never shoot a right hand gun. In percussion, Lyman makes lefties, Mike Lange makes custom lefties for very little more than a production gun in both percussion and flint. Another good choice for lefties are the under-hammer rifles. Check out these suppliers for under hammer and left hand guns.

There are also a couple of sites dedicated to the underhammer action if you Google underhammer muzzle loaders.

Yes there are a good variety of "south paws" out there in percussion, sadly not so many in flint but they are still out there.

There are some Lefties made by CVA out there as well. Most are very straight shooting guns and fairly cheap to buy.

Have 3 lefties: T/C Renegade .54, T/C New Englander .54, and a Lyman GPH .54 (I think there's a pattern here). Purchased all through Gunbroker. Use "left handed" or LH in the search criteria and you'll usually pull up between 15 or 20. I'm still looking for a LH .58.
The Lyman site lists what they have available in LH, as well as parts, e.g., left handed barrels for swapping out if the mood and wallet move you.
Good luck with the search.

Sadly, Mike Lange is no longer taking orders or building custom muzzle loaders. I have a TVM left handed flinter so I know they offer percussion lefties as well.

That is really too bad. Wonder why he decided to get out of it. I know it wasn't his primary income source but he was selling a ton of rifles. Maybe just got too busy for the time he wanted to spend. If I didn't already have a full complement of left hand muzzle loaders I would have ordered one from him for sure, just to try.

he was makin' a go of it but, the tax man got him. wanted to tax his inventory like it was cash layin' around. he's got quite a rant about it on the traditional muzzleloading on the cheap forum.

plus, I think the arthritis was catcin' up with him.

That and he had a couple of obnoxious customers that drove all the fun and satisfaction of building muzzle loaders out of it entirely. He is finishing up all the orders he had prior to going back to working a regular job but not taking any more orders. I do believe that he is still building his signature Rug-Rat rifles to bring to a few annual events such as Friendship but nothing custom.

There is more to this story than this. Under GAAP accounting, work in progress, inventories, and unrealized capital gains are never taxed until they are sold. They may be "marked to market" for balance sheet or other reporting purposes, but not for tax purposes, (unless the item is accepted as a cash equivilent). Custom ML'ers sitting in inventory don't have the same liquidity as short t-bills!

I went back & found his explanation/rant on traditional muzzleloading on the cheap. besides the member here who trashed his rep in spite of all mike tried to do to make things right, he got hit by the government with a "self-employment tax" on top of regular income tax & all the other taxes he was already payin'.

Sorry to hear that, but back to the main question. There are lots of places to get left hand muzzle loaders and they aren't much different in price. To clarify my post above, Lyman makes both left hand percussion and flintlocks. No need to suffer using a right hand gun, though as I said earlier,in percussion it is workable (wear long sleeves so you con't get cap speckle on your right forearm), definitely NOT my idea of a good plan with flint locks.
