Rocky Mountian Hawken

I have been back and forth over what my first BP rifle should be. I first wanted Flintlock then switched to percussion. I read more and went back to flintlock, then back to percussion. Anyway, I decided on the Pedersoli Rocky Mountain Hawken with maple stock .54 caliber.

Plan to shoot only roundball for hunting.

Does anyone have experience with this rifle? It looks like a solid piece after the extensive search I have done on the internet.

The main reason I even looked into Muzzle loading is to participate in the hunting days that allow muzzle loaders. There is no way I wanted to get a modern in-line. That is way to similar to my centerfire bolt actions.

Anyway, my long internet search has landed me ordering a Pedersoli Rocky Mountain Hawken. Hope it was the right choice.

I fired that same model rifle several months ago, when another member here by the handle of 2Barrel came to our Club's monthly Black Powder League Shoot. What a beautiful piece! I drilled the X-Ring with that thing. I ended up spotting for our new friend, and he won the Match with that rifle that day! Beat me by a couple points or so if I remember right.

You won't be disappointed!

The Pedersoli Rocky Mountain Hawken in .54 was my first muzzleloader, just a few months ago. It's a great shooter out of the box.

I have one with a walnut stock. They are shooters.
It is as accurate as any of my other guns. Very well put together also.
It has some nice touches. The breechplug,triggerguard,butt plate,lock, nose cap,and escutcheons are all case colored. The browning on the barrel is very smooth and even.
If you can pick one up reasonably i think they are worth it. cabelas had them on sale last year for 800 bucks.

ive never had one of their hawkens but if its got pedersoli on it you cant go wrong. i have had 4 of their other guns and they were all shooters. ive never known anyone personaly that has had any trouble out of a pedersoli so im bettin u have bought yourself a lifetime centershooter.

Ohhhhh boy. Your gonna be hooked now. Thats a wonderful rifle. I bought one last year and what a great shooter it is. I use 80 grains of 2F, a .530 round ball and a prelubed .015 patch. I tryed using .018 pillow ticking but its just to darn tight. And I mean tight. Good luck with your new rifle and be safe and have fun. :thumbsup:

If you haven't ordered it yet, try Richard Beauchamp at flintlocksetc.com. He has some nice wood in that rifle (won't shoot better though--same but not better).

I have one and love it. Its well made and a great shooter. The only thing I had to change on mine was the rear sight. I took off the adjustable sight and put a traditional buckhorn rear sight on it which moved it forward a little and I can focus on it easier.

What sight did you use that would fit in the dovetail? I haven't been able to find one to fit properly. I have the same issue; I'd like to move the rear sight forward to the dovetail, instead of being a few inches behind it (eyes aging).

I used the Jim Bridger rear sight from Track of the Wolf (#RS-PA-15).

did someone try minnie ball or something else?

me to have problem with rear sight. it is to close to eye and I am trying to find something better.

now is 18cm moved front.
it is ok now!

l have .535 LEE moulds it is not so good...
