C'mon guys, there's gotta be somewhere you can pick up a range rod for your flinter, SOMEONE must make them, no? Or do you just have to make your own?

Wow! That's perfect! Can't believe I didn't catch those when looking through their catalog, both "hard copy" and online. In such an obvious vendor's place, so out in the open it was hidden!

Many Thanks, J!

You'd never think to look under "short starters". They oughta put 'em with the ramrods... :idunno:

I made mine out of an old rifle ramrod that broke and an old door Knob. Just cut off the right length of ramrod with the brass end still on it and then epoxy into one of the old fashioned square rod door knobs. I actually have a matching set of short starter and ramrod done that way.

In the photos of my pistol case can be seen the ramrod I made from a 3/8" diameter hickory rod plus a porcelin drawer knob I picked up at Ace Hardware.

To install the knob I drilled a clearance sized hole for the knob screw and epoxied it into the wooden rod.

Nice job, Zonie, and VERY nice gun! One of yours?

I especially like the angle and length of the "grip". Looks like it gives a full handful, also the angle reminds me of a Bisley type, my favorite type of handle on a pistol.

My archery club is next door to a golf range this gives me a great supply of golf balls for anything that needs a handle this is my small pistol ram rod,
i use the ball as a hammer to get the patched ball started followed by the short end to clear the muzzle before i seat the ball.

Good idea on the goof balls!
I like most aspects of traditional black powder shooting, but I distrust wooden ramrods due to several mishaps involving inferior wood/craftsmanship. So, I ALWAYS replace ramrods with synthetic, then turn the ramrod into ball/short starters.
Don't have a pic, but mine has the base of an elk antler for the handle.

I found a couple on eBay, one in 50 cal and one in 54 cal. I don't want to post a link for fear of being labeled a spammer, but go there and search for "pistol ramrod" and they will come up. They are running less than $15 each shipped.

Yes, I built it using this "Life Like" brand plastic model of a French Dueling pistol.

I have sense fixed the model by adding a Siler frizzen but the plastic flint doesn't throw any sparks. :rotf:

Very nice, I like that idea! How did you affix the rod to the knob?

Great ideas. I used my old RR from my rifle that broke and put a new jag on it and cut it down to fit the pistol, but like the porcelin knob option!

Track of the wolf sells 12in hickory rods to make your own. I think they were 65 cents i keep a few on hand when i am ordering supply's i add them to my order.

"...How did you affix the rod to the knob?"
------------------

Most of the drawer knobs come with a small screw either sticking out of them or screwed into them.

To attach the knob to the rod I measured the screw size and then drilled a hole just slightly larger into the center of the rod.

Using a slow curing 2 part epoxy in the hole I inserted the knob and screw and let it cure.

Although the pictures make the rod look brown, I wanted it to look more like ebony so I stained it black with a felt tip marker followed by a coat of Tru-Oil to seal it.

That's awesome! I will try that. I like the pistol boxes too!

I want to build a gun box for my pistol.

It's a Traditions Trapper model, percussion.

That is EXACTLY what I did to mine - after all, a felt-tip marker is only another kind of handy spirit stain. It has been done almost twenty years now and still looks good. Well, that's not quite true...it looks used, which is the whole idea, I
guess.

I bought a 3/8" x 48" nylon ramrod and built a range rod for my rifle. Added a ramrod tip to the left over portion for a pistol rod. Made T handles out of deer antler and pinned them with 1/16" brass stock.
