I decided to try paper cartridges today. I use the instructions from Dave Berken on the youtube. Uses hair curlists papers. They look pretty swell and we’re very fast and easy to do, even for a novice like yours truly.

I am using roundies (.454s) and plan to lube the bullet ends this afternoon with paraffin and lard. Then tonight I’m going to hit the range where the real test will begin. Hoping they shoot okay in my ‘58 Remy.

Will report back. Okay alright now bye, take care,

SP, Is the twist end seen in the photo in the bullet rack, powder end or roundball end?

If powder end, i made some like that, i found the extra paper in the twist had a bad habit of not burning and from the powder pressure pushed the unburned paper and clogged the nipple in 4 of 12 shots or so. I just inserted the paper cart as in your pic. In the cylinder. Thus making the next reloaded cylinder impossible to fire until i pulled the nipple and unclogged the hole or used a strong nipple pick to push the paper out if possible.

So after the first cylinder being fired, if you have trouble with a reload not firing, could an issue for you to be aware of.

If it is the ball end, and the paper is still on the ball as you load, may be tough to rotate the cylinder in the gun as the excess paper may jam up by the barrel to stop the rotation of the cylinder. This is if you load the cylinder in the gun.

I make mine the same way only i have the twisty end for the ball end and it comes off when i load. No problem. I have 2 mandrels, one for 30 grns of Swiss for the 44 and one for 20 grns Swiss for the 36.

Guys they worked real good. Real pleased with them:

They let out alot of “confetti” upon firing and were a hoot. There were just a few bits of paper leftover but nothing major. Functioned great with no misfires or hangfires. Need to probably experiment with lubes as the lard and paraffin mix seemed to still need a swipe of the bore every few cylinders. Might even try wads or grease cookies inside the cartridges themselves. Had a blast and several people came over to watch. Love it guys!

The twisty tail is over the ball. With the style I made, the rear of the powder section is flat with only one layer of paper. I had no misfires. Some paper was left behind, but it wasn’t an issue. I loaded them with 30 grs. and there was plenty of clearance and the tails were smooshed down anyway. I did have one bit of paper get between the cylinder and forcing cone one time, but it was easily cleared. Next time I’ll watch for it during loading.

When using conicals the twisty for me is on the base, but I trim it. Never had issues and noticed the little shards of paper left behind and eventually tried leaving them to see if they interfered, which they did not in 3 cylinders worth.

Gatofeo’s #1 lube works wonderfully for me, and my conicals I designed with a narrow lune groove (my modified design might get shallower too).

SP great on the no problems with the carts. I have a 58 in 36 cal that i was doing the carts for. Another question, in your pistol picture, above left of the nipple wrench is a 4" or so black rod. What is it and used for? Again very happy worked out well for you. They are a head turner with the confetti for sure.

It’s just a plastic punch that I use to make sure the caps are fully seated.
