Lyman GPP pistol failed to fire first round yesterday. After ensuring the nipple was clear, I attempted to fire, wasting about 8 more caps. I removed the barrel but was unsure how to remove the breechplug. Instruction manual isn't clear. Rather than screw up the bluing while experimenting with plug removal, I gave up. My extractor does not want to engage the round. It is either a cheap extractor, or more likely I don't know what I am doing. It's a .490 ball with a prelubed patch I have fired 50 times before. Anyway, I'm sure the problem was my wet swab with no dry patch followup. Wet powder no doubt. Anyway, I have reported here for my internet flogging, and then hopefully some help. Thanks, Dewayne

I would, remove the allen screw and run a pipe cleaner down the hole, You will see if you kept your powder dry. Next remove the nipple and run a pick (thin wire) to clear it, maybe a clogged nipple? Replace the allen screw then Put a couple of grains in the snail via and try to fire again. You may also have trouble pulling the charge just using the short ramrod try one for a rifle? Your puller may not be engaging the ball because the patch is binding up the threads try to push the patch to the sides of the barrel and engage the ball ram the puller with authority. Finally you may have to use a pneumatic blow gun and compressed air to blow it out or get one of those ball dischargers at a place like bass pro or cabellas otherwise you have to order one.

Appreciate it guys. I thought the breech plug looked permanent. That's what I stopped. I have pulled the nipple and cleaned it. I will do as you say and probe further to make sure ignition is getting all the way to the chamber. Thanks

You may have dryballed. I have on occasion. Remove the nipple and try to shake as much 4f as you can down the hole. Tap the side of the gun to get it down good. Do it again. Replace the nipple, cap and fire downrange. It should clear the round.

Maybe the problem is that patch that you've fired fifty times before...time to use a new patch :rotf:

I would highly recommend getting one of the co2 dispensers. You place this devise over the nipple and give it a shot and out pops the ball, conical, etc- what ever you loaded. One trouble (I think) in trying to get a screw into the ball is that the ball is engaged to the bore only around the outside rim- not much resistance, so in trying to screw into a PRB you might just be rotating the ball. You can more easily screw into a conical but doing so destroys a $1.00- $1.50 conical whereas the CO2 dispenser saves to projectile if you shoot it into a soft cushion, etc. If you use a CO2 and aim for dirt, gravel, etc the force of the projectile will dent it as it hits the ground.

The second thing you buy after your first muzzle loader is a CO2 discharger. Sooner or later you well have a ftf and the CO2 well make very short work the problem. If you discharge in to a box of wadded up newspaper you can save the projectile.

I'm tired of looking for the patch downrange so I can reuse it anyway. I'll try a new one.

Got it cleared by cleaning and putting some powder under the nipple numerous times. Not certain which attempt even cleared it so the powder must have been pretty damp.

Yep, and you can get one right now for $8.50 ($10 less 15%) from http://rmcoxyoke.com/rmcoxyoke_cfmfiles/product.cfm?msection=1868

My spare just came in the mail today, and it's the same one I got last year from Cabelas for $20, except the new one also includes the flintlock adapter. The ones from Cabelas require you to buy the adapters separately.
