I was blessed enough to bring home a nice 6pt buck this past weekend (read about the hunt in the hunting forum under "successful Ozarks hunt"). I was also fortunate enough to recover my first roundball fired into an animal and wanted to share what I found. The ball was a 50cal (.490) propelled by 60gr of FFFG Goex bp. I hit the buck broadside through the top of both shoulder blades and the spine dropping the buck in his tracks with the ball stopping just under the hide on the far side. It turned into an almost flat disk that measured .730 diameter and final weight was 167gr. I was very impressed with the final diameter and the amount of weight that it retained after penetrating that much bone. I really love this muzzleloading stuff.

Basically, it did exactly what it was suppose to do when you did exactly what you were suppose to do!

The only thing I hate and the worse part about them is you constantly have to keep your barrel pointed up while walking and forget about shooting out a tree stand at a downward angle, the balls always roll out of the barrel when doing these things. Some times its best to put a piece of tape over the bore so the ball wont completely fall out and ruin your hunt.

Are you using a patch with the ball??? or the right size ball for the rifle?? when loaded properly the ball should stay on the powder charge. If not and it rolls forward and you shoot it, it will mess up the barrel by having a restriction and bulging the barrel.

I.....uh......I'm at a loss for words. :hmm: How do you reply to something like that? :idunno:

:rotf: :rotf: im about to bust a gut from laughing so hard.

oh my lord, you ever laugh so hard you almost throw up?

sorry turkhunter, I got sucked into kentuckywindage's comment!
anyway! thats the beauty of a soft lead projectile
I shot a 50 cal maxi bullet into my bullet trap the other day and when i pulled it out it was bigger than a snapple cap 1.25-1.5 inches in diameter blew my friends mind.
Don't get me wrong i'm not pushing a maxi- bullet I'm totaly a round ball man but I had to use it to illustrate a point to my friend.
P.S. if you think shootin deer with a muzzleloader is fun try squirrels and you'll really be hooked.

you should be, people on the forums lately need a good laugh to loosen up and stop being a bunch of stiffs.

Thank you for your post! On every deer I have killed when I was able to recover the ball I had results very much like yours. . There are those among us that think expansion and energy transfer are myths. The killing ability of MLR's are often down played. I killed several Texas hill country deer with a .40 and they did a great job. Anyone that has seen what a shoulder hit on small game with a lightly loaded .36 will do will rethink some of this. Again thanks for your post!

Yeah, I kind of thought you were pulling our leg. Good to see you have a sense of humor.
