RS versus Select

My local shop doesn't carry Goex, and I really don't feel like paying the hazardous shipping fee to get it shipped in--which means I'm relegated to using Pyrodex.

The question of the day is what's the real difference between RS & Select? Or is it simply a marketing ploy?

I've been using RS, but I picked up a can of Select this afternoon so I can make some smoke this weekend. As a rookie, am I going to notice a difference?

The difference between the two is Select is more uniform in the grain size then RS. Actually if you shoot them both you might see as I did that RS is just as good as Select for target shooting and hunting. I really did not see an advantage to the Select.

They both make smoke, they both go boom! and they both have to be cleaned out of the barrel at the end of the shooting session...

Select is supposed to provide tighter groups. I've never used it so I can't say if this is true. If you have a tried and true load with the RS shoot the same load with the Select and see what happens. I'd be interested in hearing what you found out.

Same experience as Cayugad...I shot Pyrodex RS in a scoped inline & sidelock percussions for several years...immediatey tried Select when it came out due to all the marketing hype...couldn't tell any difference...after it was used up I continued to only use RS until I switched to flintlocks and Goex, now I've switched any remaining percussions to Goex also...if there's anyway you can get into splitting a case of Goex 3F with a couple other guys, you'll probably never use Pyrodex again...it's fast, clean, and accurate...but to your question, I'd pick RS over Select any day of the week even if they were the same price

I agree with roundball.
I shot RS for a number of years. It worked fine in my Caplocks .
I had noticed Select on the shelf but the price was always a couple of bucks more than the RS so I didn't bother with it.
One day when I went into the gunstore to buy some RS, they didn't have any, so I bought the Select.
I looked forward to great and wonderful things with my new High Price powder.
I was very dissapointed. As far as I could tell, it didn't shoot as well as the RS.
Don't let my experiance slant your views though.
I will be interested in seeing what you think the results are.

This forum is outstanding with all the information being traded back and forth. I almost bought Pyrodex Select about three weeks ago. I had not experienced that style of powder and the sales clerk was not that convicing for the purchase. So I passed it up. Judging from what I'm reading here, I'm glad I did.

I'm still looking for Black Mag 3. I want to experience the results vs. Pyrodex.

For $3 it didn't seem like that big of a deal so I went for it... I've had fine results with the RS too (excepting one load that wouldn't fire that I'm blaming on a plugged nipple).

My guess was that it was more marketing than anything else. That said, I'll get a chance to try both tomorrow at the range.

I shoot pyrodex when I have nothing else to shoot other than APP.

For me I would not even fool with Pyrodex. I'd much rather shoot Black Powder, Black Mag'3 or Hodgdon 777 3F.

Perhaps you can get a good deal on Goex BP or something else if you go in with some friends on a larger order to split the hazmat and shipping costs?

Pappa Bear was kind enough to PM me with the name of a guy up in Winchester who I can hook up with for some Goex... I make my way through there periodically so once I get set up with him I'll be sure to stock up with enough to keep me between trips.

If your looking at powder inc.they also have a powder called skimish and it 's I think 8.00 or less a pound coming payday i'm going to give it a try with the haz mzt dilivered to Georgia 82.00 5 pound case to me thats cheap if you cocider that a local plase 60 miles from me sells goex for 19.95 a pound well thats a whole lot cheaper by 12.00 and the gas in my suburban '77 model (gas guzzler) to drive 120 miles round trip give them a try .

There used to be a dealer on Mercury Blvd. in Hampton VA who had GOEX and a lot of other BP needs. I bought several lbs. there a few years ago. There are a bunch of NSSA shooters in that area and they AINT GOIN TO SHOOT SUBSTITUTES. good luck ( I aint gointo shoot synthetics either----I'GRIND MY OWN FIRST) ---I may have to drive back from MT to get some. :m2c: :imo: :nono:
