I shot my Stainless steel Ruger Old Army .45 This past sunday.I tried those new 30 grain Pryodex pistol pellets with Remington caps. The pellets were nice but I still prefer Black powder. I find that Pryodex fouls more vs Black Powder. Also you can not fine tue your load 30 grains only. With Black powder you can adjust up and down as needed The pistol was accurate with the Pellets, but when I switched to conventional Black Powder I could dial her in a little tighter

Shot mine on Saturday. I know mine will hold a maximum of 39 grains FFFg + ball which takes it to just below the chamber mouth. Does shooting a 30g pellet seat the level of the ball well down the chamber? I guess a pellet would not be compatible for use with a filler but maybe I'm wrong?

Incidentally, I usually use 22g FFFg with semolina filler. Just for the sheer heck of it I loaded her with 39g Swiss #2 and freehand at 25 metres scored 3-bulls, 2-nines and a seven! Makes you wonder if reduced charges do make that much difference after all! I'll go back to 22g though - if only because you soon get through a flask of powder with the heavier load!

Tight Wad :hatsoff:

Tight Wad,
Well the 30 grain pellet and ball seats around 1/4 inch, 5mm or so below cylinder. I talked to Ruger they say you can not over load the Old Army with to much powder, if you do, you can not seat the ball in below the cylinder face and the cylinder will not rotate. I was have trouble will caps jamming when rotating I was useing #11's I might try #10's and see if that works better

John Taylor,
Yes FF works well in mine as well with miniballs, When I use standard round ball FFF works better.

I have used triple 7, Black Mag, 2f, 3f, and regular pyrodex in my stainless old army and I find that it shoots better than I can hold with all of them. My problem is that black powder gums up the works much quicker and Black Mag is so much cleaner I'm talking several cylinders before cleaning. And in my 36 Colt replaca black powder really fouls it. :hmm: A side bar on the Black Mag back off on your charge that stuff is HOT :nono:

Keep yer flint sharp  Firelock
