Stainless guns are around 500., I bought 2 unfired in the boxes with paper work, one was 450. and the other was 500. Blue are usally 100. or so less. Nut driver for nipple wrench, and Remington #10 caps, works on mine. Manuals can be downloaded. I forgot the charge, but I think 35 grains of 777.

I have 2, a re-built SS with a blued cylinder, and NIB stainless I'm saving for grandson.

IIRC I was able to get 40gr of 2F Goex + 1/8" lubed felt wad + .457" Speer RB seated w/ no difficulties. It literally cuts one ragged hole at 20 yards.

I have heard of these being modified for extra cyl capacity, but since I bought this one used, I have no idea whether that is the case. I paid $350 for it, and consider that a good deal. It is a 1978 vintage gun w/ the 7 1/2" barrel and adjustable sights. My NIB gun is a newer one, but still has the 7 1/2" barrel and adjustable sights. I stole it for $400. Used ones around here seem to go for $500-600. Personally, I wouldn't give but half that for one of the fixed-sight models.

Also you have to consider when purchasing one, the availability of spare parts. I have heard that if you break a part on one, that now it's new role is as a spare parts gun for another Ruger.
And yes it is it own gun, meaning it is not a"civil war" gun. I have seen a couple of guys carry them out on the field in a reenactment and get lots of grief from the rank and file, along with the event organizers. If your going to do any reenactments with your sidearm it better be a "modern" replica or an original. Other wise be prepared at some events if your wearing it to either leave the event or take off the sidearm.

Indeed 40 grns of powder, a wad, and ball will fit with the balls seated a little past flush.

Clements does the boring of the chambers to hold an extra 5-10 grns of powder.

ClassicBallistix sells cylinders that are deeper.

All top notch from what I understand.

for what it's worth, i bought a spare cylinder for mine from ClassicBallistix ... they're great folks and the cylinder works just as well as the factory one ... money well spent, IMHO ...

make good smoke!

The nipples on the ROA have a slight taper to them that prevents the caps from seating well once fired and dirtied. You can remove them and chuck them in a drill press or lathe and remove most all of the taper with a file and eliminate the misfire problem. Just be careful not to alter the outer dimentions so as to stay within the #11 cap dimentions. I have always used CCI Magnum #11 with my stainless and had trouble after the first couple of cylinder rounds.Finaly at Friendship I had had enough cleaning, removed the nipples and went to the lathe at one of the gunsmiths and fixed the problem once and for all, should have done it years ago LOL.
If your not comfortable smithing your gun work take it to someone you trust to do it for ya!
Good luck and welcome to the Forum.

My local gun shop has a used Ruger in SS for $600.00. I didn't inspect it or ask if it had been fired. It looked new and when my wife saw the look in my eye she drug me out of the shop....

Well they're not being made any longer but that still seems like a scalping price to me. I paid 175.00 for my used blued ROA some ten years ago.
Granted that was a good deal but 600.00 seems awfully high to me. MD

Here in yUK, where the ROA REALLY took off at the time of the cartridge handgun ban, a good ROA is selling for about $800-900.

i agree... but then again, it's a supply & demand thing: just because I wouldn't pay that for a revolver doesn't mean the next guy won't.

make good (but less expensive) smoke!

I got lucky and acquired a stainless Old Army from a coworker for free. She said she tried selling it to Cabela's and they wouldn't take it because the grips were in bad condition. When I said I was interested she said "Are you serious? It's a black powder revolver" and gave it to me.

I have taken mine out several times to shoot and love it. Sometimes I don't get ignition on the first hammer strike but I believe this particular gun is from the 70s or 80s and may need new nipples.

I used crisco at first but then switched to wonder wads and never looked back. I have also been trying out pellets and they are convenient but for some reason I can't stand the smell of pellets...I don't know off the top of my head which brand they are.

I also bought a Triple K holster for it and a 2" belt from Track of the Wolf.

:( $400 is a good price for an Old Army in good condition. I gave $450 for a 7-1/2" fixed sight blued model (my favorite version, BTW) the same year they quit making them. The price has only gone up since then. Supply and demand and all that... Funny how the demand goes up right after the supply starts to dry up.

you got an ROA for free??!!

you should wallow in guilt, to the point of physical pain!

to cure this condition, put the revolver in a box and send it to me...

:rotf: :rotf: :rotf:

hardly seems sporting, but sometimes the world cuts you a break
