Ruger Old Model Army brass grip frame

I ran on to a guy a while back that sold me some black powder. He called me up the other day and wanted to know if I would be interested in buying a Ruger Old Army. I had him send me a picture and it has the brass grip frame. From what little I've heard, they seem to be worth a bit more for some reason. Please advise me on what price range I should stay in, as I'm not the resident expert with it come to black powder revolvers.

Believe Ruger had the brass grip frame as an option for a year or two, then there are the aftermarket brass frames from places like Brownells. Don’t know if the brass grip adds any value, but doubt it decreases the value. If you really want to know what the ROA is selling for you can check the recently SOLD prices on various auction sites. Can be a wide gap on price depending whether one is buying or selling.

Condition plays a big part in the price. Since the Ruger Old Army is no longer being made and parts are scarce the price for a good one is high. I have two - one early blue model that I purchased used with orange/black box & paperwork for $300 that is in very good condition and the other is a new in box never fired stainless steel model I purchased for $400. This was about 7 years ago for the S.S. one. Most people that have one for sale feel that they have something that is VERY valuable and price it accordingly . If you just want a shooter then get a good reproduction but if you must have an Ruger Old Army buy a good one - price is what you feel comfortable with.

They are increasingly sought after as there's a part that can be gotten after-market that makes them even more versatile.

If the ROA is in working condition, $300 is a great price. I would jump on it. I don't worry about cosmetic condition, just proper function.

I believe I would grab it at that price. I think even $400 would be pretty good. Quite happy with mine I grabbed with a .45 colt conversion cylinder for $550. You won't be dissapointed at that price!

My son recently sold his NIB ROA for $799.00. The brass grip frame will add to the value, perhaps considerably, to a Ruger collector.

Snap it up! Even if it needs a bit of care it’s worth tha and much more. You could scrap it on gunbroker and probably return 500.00...

i've had a few. Wish I'd have kept one. There were approx 1100 originally made with brass grip frame. Ruger has confirmed mine by serial number when I've called in. Ruger did make "some" brass grip frames to sell after-market. Other companies made some, too, or so I've been told. These upgrades required some fitting, so watch for good Ruger quality fit & finish. Best approach is to call Ruger to get confirmation. I don't think they can do any more than tell you if the serial number ROA you have came with brass or not. Yes...value is enhanced by brass. Condition is king!

I was just looking for bicentennial ROAs on GB.
I found two completed auctions.
One, with no box or docs, went for over $800, earlier this month.
Almost makes one not want to shoot theirs.

I picked the gun up, cleaned it some and posted in on Gunbroker last night. I'm more of a traditionalist when it comes to black powder firearms, modern sights, in-lines and scopes don't appeal to me. I figured I could sell it for more and put the money into something else. Within a couple of hours from posting, someone has bid $500. That being said, I put a buy it now for $750. There were two others listed at $900 and $999, but no bids. I figured beings I got a good deal, $750 may be a good deal for some Ruger collector.

If the gripframe is original, Ruger will send you a letter stating that on letterhead for free. At least they did for the SBH had. The factory guns were made in 1972 or early '73 if I remember correctly.

That makes sense as I bought it before I graduated from high school and that was in 1975
