I would not use any solution that contians mecuric chloride. It is very nasty from a health standpoint. If you put it on a hot barrel the vapors will be inhaled. Mercury poisoning is very bad. Remember the Mad Hatter? That was mercury poisoning.

I suggest looking up the MSDS for Birchwoold Casey plumb brown. It uses nitric acid instead of mecuric chloride to get the rust going. You can make a close copy from the MSDS.
