Rust bluing ?

Oof, I'm staying away from bleach.

I will be doing this outside !!! All it takes is 20 minutes in the bleach and then the oil.

I used one cup of hydrogen peroxide, 1/2 cup of white vinegar, and about 2 teaspoons of table salt,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

If the OP's mentor did in fact us bleach to achieve a color case finish I think there was some tall tails floating around with some "wacky tabacky" mixed in .

I would NEVER use bleach. I make hatchets, etc. and used bleach- it aggressively eats away metal and can create a worm like pattern tha you don't want. Try laurel Mountain Fore, foolproof results.

I too am intersted to see how this turns out.. good or bad.. if it turns out good then I may use your method for my knives, if it turns out bad then I’ll never use it...

I've been studying up on rust bluing and that sure seems like the way to go. Not difficult either.

Is it possible to get a deep dark blue/black, like the more expensive guns, with rust bluing? It would be nice to approximate the bluing of original Colts. I'm probably dreaming, but has anyone come close with home tools?

This is my post earlier, #13. I used Pilkington's Rust Blue but Laurel Mt Forge is also good to use. Card between coats and use distilled water for boiling for 5 minutes. For a finer finish, card sooner for each coat. Waiting longer will give you a somewhat duller finish. My experience anyway, others may have different results.

I just saw a beautiful Mike Brooks fowler in another forum. It has an amazing barrel. Mike stated that the barrel was boiled in bleach. Here are some photos.
