Finished this one this morning. It's been a couple of years since I made a knife with a guard. This one was almost more fun than work, but was also very time consuming requiring a lot of hand filing. 9" blade of 01 vanadium tool steel. Through tang peened over a steel butt cap, in a grip of very nice curly maple, with chip carved rings. Grip is 4 5/8" in total length. All mounts and hardware on knife and sheath are of mild steel. All very lightly aged by the cold blue and bleach method. I hope you enjoy a look.

That knife looks really good, one of these days I would like to be able to make knives like that. How do you do the metal hardware on the sheath? I haven't seen a sheath where is was sewn on the back like that either but it looks really good. I like it.

Showoff! :blah:

This knife looks better than the pictures show.
Nice work Wick! :v

Very nice work. I need to ask this question: I could not help but notice the "scallops" on the handle. I can see how a gouge can make the indention, but what tool did you use to get the "Square" edges at the bottom of the cuts?

I learn something new every time you post a picture of a new work. Keep it up! :hatsoff: :hatsoff:

Hi Paul. I use an Exacto knife. Look close and you will see the cut is a continuous ring around the grip.

Ah! I could not see that in the pictures. Thanks. I was thinking a razor, or Exacto-knife was what I would use, but I thought it better to ask. Thanks for the response, Wick.

Minwax Antique Oil. It is much the same as Truoil or most other linseed based oil finishes, except it starts setting in minutes. As soon as you think it is, you wipe it off and leave it alone for a day. It goes on very thin like the Chambers oil. Three coats is normally enough. The fellow who built my rifle used it, but I haven't had much luck with it on gun stocks. You have to overlap it on something that long. He could do it very well, but I can't. Great for knife grips though. The stain is Fiebings med. brown spirit based stain sanded back lightly with 400 grit, and wiped with acetone.

Wick: Is the Museum of Modern Art in NYC aware of your work? They need some pieces to add to their collections!

C'mon Bill, He already has trouble finding a hat that fits.

Besides, Wick cannot go near a museum or antique shop (being the relic that he is) They all want to put HIM on display! :rotf: :rotf:

VERY nice work.....doubtless the property of a well-to-do militiaman

Is the steel scabbard throat 18 ga steel with the hook welded on? riveted?

Is the throat pinned to the leather, with the blade narrower, to ride between the two pins? Or are there four pins, peened inside the sheath?

O-1 is probably the best value in carbon steel out there! My supplier charges the same for O-1 as for 10-series.

Superb work, Wick
