I have been in the shop getting some more powder measure blanks together so that I have plenty on hand as the need arises.

While gazing around I noticed the last measure that I had a catastrophic failure with sitting on the bench laughung at my aggressive manipulation of the tools. :slap:

Figured that I am not one to give up easily I chucked it up in the lathe and finished it off.

It went from this:

The first couple pics show a .495 ball for comparison and the last pic shows a .600 ball. This measure throws a 40gr charge and is made up of Elk & Ebony.

Hope you enjoy the pictures.

This one I just finished up.

Did a bit of math, there is 4hrs time from rough blank to finished product on this unit.

This is Walnut, Ivory, and Ebony, the powder chamber is 1/2" and its od is about .700, it throws 70gr of powder.

It is pictured with a .495 and a .600 diameter ball for size comparisson.

Here are the pics for your viewing pleasure.

I hate to say it, but, I don't care for the turning on the ebony part... The piece as a whole looks good I'm liking the look of the walnut and ivory, but the ebony throws the flow off for me. almost like its turned too small, maybe? :idunno:
Now This is just my opinion and ya know what they say 'bout opinions! keep up the good work though, they are really nice!

Its all good, appreciate the honest input.

I probably should have walked away when I got to the ebony as I was a bit tired, instead I just powered thru.

It'll make a great blanket prize.

I really like the walnut though and will be making many more with that wood, its all a learning curve.

Do You put any of yours in "Ad" here I'd like one if you do..very nice I make them too out of deer leg bones.. Jeff

This is getting away from the subject by about 50% but”¦

Until I got sidetracked by getting back into shooting I was turning a lot of wood. Bowls, natural edge bowls, lidded boxes, captured ring goblets, whatever the wood and my mood at the time dictated. Most days, I entered the shop not knowing what that day’s project would be. One of the things that has sold well is pedestaled, lidded, candy dishes. The body and lid of the dish is maple or some other light colored wood and the pedestal and lid finial are a darker wood like walnut or cherry. The cherry will of course turn much darker over a period of time as will Ossage orange.
It was a bit of a learning curve (that hasn’t ended yet) getting the right style and look into the pedestals and finials. If you don’t already have it, get a video by Cindy Drozda titled Elegant Finials. You may not be interested in what she is making, but the techniques are applicable to any small turning.
Your measures, to me anyway, come off as a variation on finials. My only criticism would be that they are too “busy”. Sometimes, less is more. Like as already been said that's just my opinion.
For what it’s worth, I am planning on doing some fancy wood funnels for filling powder horns. 99% of the wood I turn enters the shop with the bark still attached. That leaves me with a lot of wood that is too small to make anything very big. Up till now it has been Christmas ornaments and eggs. Or campfires. Now I will be able to add funnels to the list.

very nice Randy! Please be sure to post up your work here, I look forward to seeing it!
I've been contemplating trying some scoops... ya know like sugar scoops? I want to try a hardwood handle and horn...dunno why, but your post got me thinking about that again!

That would be different. All the ones I ever saw (with no attempt at being PC or HC)were multi-axis turnings. I haven't tried that one yet. Probably because I'm too lazy to make the fixtures. The funnels I want to make will require a new doughnut chuck, but those are easy to make.
