Sgt. Alvin York fought in WWI, so was before Hitler. This is supposed to be ML forum. Gary Cooper did use a cap lock rifle in the turkey shoot scene in the movie and cap and ball revolvers to "write" his initials. It is supposed that he used a 30.06 1917 instead of the 1903 Springfield as not that many were available when he deployed. I had a friend whose Alvin York rifle was sold in his estate auction. It was a muzzle loader.

Alvin York's story is very interesting. He was 30 years old when drafted which is much older than most draftees in any following war. If my memory is correct the max-age for any draftee in WWII was 36 and that was only near the war's end.
On a related note, my grandfather was 36 when drafted in 1943 and was a month shy of 38 when he landed on Omaha Beach on D-Day +3. All men 18-45 were required to register, but 37 was the max draft age

Errr... Hitler also fought in WW1. God must have been looking out for him to keep him safe.
And yes, this is supposed to be a muzzleloading forum.
Try going back and reading the INITIAL post. The topic started off about muzzleloaders in the movie.
Like many topics - additional information gets into the thread. That's normal.
If you think the topic should have been pure muzzleloading - then you should have stayed on topic without your devil worshipping comment about Hitler and God.

We had a blowhard sergeant in the NG who said he was the best shot in the state, supposedly shot on the state rifle team, blab, blab, etc. we went to qualify, he was the WORST shot in the company. We called him SERGEANT DORK ....

Yup- It's really hard these days to find a good movie to watch that promotes decency, honesty and basic God fearing family values without promoting Socialism, perversion and hatred of democracy.

Sorry -- but which side of our political ledger REALLY hates Democracy? Hollywood and its fiction -- or the Lying Autocrat and his brainless followers who want to tear away any meaningful democratic voting process in this country? Be careful who you accuse of "hating democracy" without looking at what has been happening over the past 5 years -- especially the past six months.

Sorry friend, but it seems we have a 50 yr veteran in office now whe it comes to lying autocrats. Nobody can beat Poor Old Joe's record. Can't get him out of your head can you?
Back to Sergeant York the true American hero. I saw the movie more than 60 yrs ago and was impressed. My grandfather fought in WWI, in France.
I will not be surprised to see a Post-Revisionist history about Sgt, York one day, just, of course, to promote alternate views of the story and the myth surrounding such a notable man as York. I'm sure it could only help future generations with the understanding of the War to End All Wars.

Maybe you should turn the pages back a few.
In 1941 when this movie was made - Hollywood was still an American institution. It for dang sure isn't now.
And don't even pretend that you know anything about me - much less make a stupid statement like the one above.
You want to defend what the movie industry is doing in today's world? Sick. Really sick....

Basic issue 30-06 ammo WW-1, 150gr cupro-nickle jacket bullet, muzzle vel. of appox 850 fps. still enough too shoot pass throughs. doubtful that A.P. would of been used bye York.
AP ammo for the 3006 really wasn't a WW1 thing, but a WW2 thing. And IF it was used in the '06 in WW1, it wouldn't have been in a rifle.

I got all fired up after reading you guys talking about Sgt York movie. So I went to Amazon and lo and behold it was available! I ordered it and got it a little while ago. Put it in the machine and see Korean script across the lower 1\3 of the screen! Thru the whole movie! Erungh!

Where in the hell did you get 850 FPS for the velocity of a 30/06 round The load you described would be traveling a minimum of 2,800 FPS and actually probably closer to 3,100. Even a 45ACP runs over 950. Get your facts straight
