White Buffalo...I wondered about the same thing, and picked up an old rip saw at a flea market last year...so far, I've been able to cut 5 patch knife blades out of it using a dremel cutting wheel...actually cuts pretty well....I use a torch on the tang to kill any temper, and use antler pieces for the handle...the hardest thing for me was grinding and edge on the blade and getting an even, common angle on the edge...my grindstone is probably too narrow....Hank

I`ve been wondering about that also, when using these thinner blades should a person just go ahead and use a electric sharpener to get the correct angle.

Working with mystery steels is not a good idea if you value your time. Most old saw blades are L6, but there is a chance that it isn't. L6 is a fine knife steel, but L6 can be bought in bar form. Then you know what you have, and do not have to bother cutting a large saw blade up, and will know more about how you may want to heat treat it. It is not expensive in bar form, why take the risk?

PitchyPine my budy did a good job of the blade and it was not a lot to re temper it it realy holds an edge even when used like a cleaver.here's a site you might find of interest just scroll down till you come to knife making supplies and click on the woods section and see some of the ozy wood for nife scales.

Wick, I was just curious to see if it could be done..and it can. I'll never be as sophiticated as you in this game, but I enjoy trying to turn out equipment...a horn, a bag, whatever...lately, I've made a bunch of short starters for the club sales table...the first ones brought smiles to the faces of those in the know, but the later ones got snapped up...I guess I just have a fascination with 'jack of all trades, master of none'...best, Hank

Hey Pitchy, it makes for a good handle on a NA style knife. Especially if it's got a few checks (cracks) in it....Bud

Thats a nice knife well done. Good idea leaving them teeth on there like that prolly never would have thought myself. Nice sheath also. :hatsoff:
