I'm not sure if I'm under the correct category here but I"m looking for a muzzloading shotgun for hunting turkey. Anybody have any experiences or advice to share? Demon

I have a Navy Arms double barrel .12 ga. that i took my first wild turkey with this spring. I have used it for years for ducks, geese, rabbits, doves and quail, but this was my first chance for turkeys. It has cylinder bore barrels, and i wouldn't want any other type.It also shoots well with patched rd balls. You should have probably put this under smoothbores though.

Do a Google search for V.M. Starr. You should find the full text of, " The Muzzleloading shotgun, it's care and use". Vic was the King of ML shotguns, and I haven't found anything to change, from what I learned from him thirty plus years ago.

starr is good primer for bp shotgun shooting and his writing helped me imensly.. he shot a side by side choked gun and it is loaded differently than a cylinder bore often called a smoothbore,.. on this list it means it can shoot ball and shot, and has a strait walled barrel from breach to muzzel.. .. a choked gun load can take quite a few differnt loads (that will fit down thru the choke) including the double nitro cards that he used.. in cylinder bore (which means no choke) a nitro card is put over the powder, then a fiber wad, that can be lubed by various means, then shot and then an overshot card.. less powder by volume is ususally used than volumen of lead shot for best patterns.. but you will find load vary considerably between shooters.. this is from different guns, different chokes, different barrrel lenghts, different gauges, different types of shot, and of course different types of game, and different hunting teckniques... so we will need more info from you to help you as bp shotgunning is a huge subject.. dave

I have taken a couple with my Pedersoli SxS 12 ga. 70 gr of pyrodex RS, overpowder and cushion wads, 1 1/4 oz copper 5's and get them in 25 yards or closer has worked for me. If I was to buy this gun again I think I would get the 10 ga. version. Though I never hunted turkey with it, I started with a TC New Englander 12 ga. single barrel and it performed just fine. You can find the TC's at a much more reasonable cost on Gunbroker or AuctionArms.

I have a custom built flint .62 smooth rifle with a 42" barrel that is set up as a turkey gun. It is recessed choked and throws a very tight group of mixed #4 and #5 shot mixed at 30 yards. In fact, I currently have it for sale. Great gun!

My smoothbore was made by Mike Meese and Curt Lyles. Curt forged the iron buttplate and triggerguard. Nitric acid stain, sliding wooden patchbox, vent liner, relief and incise carving.Nice early gun. email me at [email protected] for pics. $1650

I have an older model Navy Arms percussion 12 gauge with the Cyl/cyl bores, no screw in chokes. I have two loads that do really well ... 70 grains of 2F and one ounce for rabbits, the other is 85 gr. of 2F and 1 1/4 ounce of 6's or 5's. That is my pheasant load and I've knocked down 33 out of 36 pheasants with that load. Gives a good pattern that isn't over spread and no holes. On top of the powder is a over powder card, fiber wad, over shot card the shot itself and another over shot card. That is the combination that gave the best patterns when working up loads, so I stuck with it. That gun hasn't taken a turkey yet.

I've been using a T/C New Englander 12ga on turkeys for years now. I picked it up for $80 in like new condition. The load that I use is:

100gr FFg Goex
2 wonder wads
100gr #5 magnum shot (harder shot)
1 wonder wad (to hold the shot)

This load patterns well & is devastating on turkeys!
