School Me On Mule Ear Locks

Here is my 1840's over/under made by J. Withers. Top rifled barrel is 44cal and bottom smooth bore is .600. Got it off of GB and it shoots like a dream. I figure the mule ear developed during the conversion from flint.

I once read that in the day the people thought they were more prone to missfire and acedental discharge. This may or may not be true but if the consumers believed it they would not buy it.
