It’s not like any Civil War era Whitworth scope that I have seen. See picture of original scope and mounts on my web site. Note the scope is easily detached from the mounts; several Civil War era Whitworth’s are known that retain their mounts, but the scope is now lost. I don’t recognise the makers name.

What’s in the wrappers marked ‘Whitworth Rifle’?

David

Might be for a Cannon.. mounting hardware looks too big for a shoulder arm.

Most of us look at everything Whitworth-y - no need to post your request twice, Sir.

I bleeve that your scope is intended for a Whitworth breech-loading field piece. Not the rifle, sorry, but nevertheless an important item of great historical interest, more so in the US of A than UK, as the Union Forces made great use of the 12 pounder Whitworth-rifled field-piece.
