How do you guys go about cutting machine screws to length? I have tried a couple of different tools, but the threaded ends of the screws are usually damaged.
also, the tang screw on my northwest trade gun-its upside down-was too short. The only screw I could find of correct length was brass.

If you're going to shorten an existing screw, put a nut or die on it first. after cutting the screw, dress the end with a file and then remove the nut (or die). this will straighten out the threads on the end.

I use electrical crimping tool that has several sizes of threaded holes for cutting off screws .
Put the screw in the threaded side first , cut , and back out the screw . Done !

The same would apply for a wood screw, only run it threw a length of scrap wood the correct thickness, trim off the section that extends past the wood...

There are tools for cutting screws. Look in the electrical dept. of any large hardware store. They carry wire cutters and electrical crimpers with built in screw cutters. The screw size is marked next to the threaded hole.

For Gods sake don't use a brass screw for the tang on your trade gun. LOL
You can get the correct screw from Track, or you can do what I just did on my Chiefs Gun and make your own. If you don't have a lathe but do have a drill press you can chuck up a piece of 3/8" mild steel and use a course file and turn a shank then thread it with die. Cut the blank from the shaft and shape the head and file or saw the slot. It's slow but it will work.
Years ago I made up a set of screws because I was too anxious to wait for mail ordered screws. They worked out fine.
