What is a good lube for sealing the cylinders on a cap and ball revolver. I've used TC Maxi lube but it gets all over everything. Are there any natural animal fats or lubes I can use. Beef and deer tallow are no problem to get.
tnx

something fairly stiff is best. I made mine with 50-50 mix of toilet ring and boot dressing. I put a small dab atop the felts I use overpowder also.

I used to use Crisco. Now I just use a wonder-wad between the powder and the ball, that's it!

A short while back there was a thread about chain-fires. Most of the guys seemed to think that they were/are primarily caused by not having caps on all of the charged chambers in a cylinder, due to caps that fall off during recoil, etc.

No one that I know in our BP league that uses wonder-wads has had a chain-fire!

Hope that this helps!

I use a mixture of 50% bee's wax and synthetic motor oil. Works great, stays equally workable in hot or cool weather. Does not run in hot weather as wonder lube does. Melt wax, add equal amout of oil. Pour into smaller usable containers, (I use old round pellet tins) and let cool. Hope this helps. Jim

On the other hand, has anyone in your BP league that does not use wonder-wads had a chain-fire?

yeah heat it up carefully and mix a chunk of wax ring and boot grease together. when it colls it is a firm grease that won't melt in hot weather but is spreadable in cold. I don't use it over ball much I dip my slugs into it and set on paper to cool. works good.
Fred did you ever shoot yer slugs?

Yes indeed they have! This happened many years ago, BEFORE I joined the league. I was told by the league chairman to buy the wonder-wads, so that I wouldn't have a problem. Sort of a rule as I was told. Either be a member of the Crisco club, or buy & use the wads. I took a look around and saw that nobody was using grease anymore, and the wads help fill the chamber to capacity so that the balls don't jump into the forcing cone, thus improving accuracy. Sort of a two for one! No messy grease, no chain-fires and improved over-all accuracy :hmm: . Why mess with something that works? :v

I've used many things during the years including Crisco, Vaseline, every type of cup grease out there, unslated lard, beeswax mixed with many of the above, etc. Whatever is soft enough to spread but not too runny is the ticket!!
