Without being overly large or extensive, what would make up a good all-round and rounded spice and seasoning kit for the trail and camp kit?

Thanks. :)

I carry sea salt and red pepper. Black pepper is a nice addition. Though not truly a spice or seasoning, maple sugar is welcome after a couple of days in the woods.

As to the PC/HC aspect, many spices/herbs were available, though the time/place/person should be considered. Examples include Nutmeg, Mace, Ginger, Cinnamon, Cloves, Thyme, Bay Leaf, and others too numerous to list (or remember).

Not really into the PC/HC aspect. Just a decent assortment to take for camp cooking, nothing exotic and easily available.

I guess that is entirely up to you and what you prefer.

Got to go with Cynthia on this one, one bottle of Mrs.Dash n yer pretty much covered, maybe black pepper, red pepper n salt seperate just in case ya want more. I usually have a bottle of garlic/onion flakes hiding someplace, but like others have said, its what I like. Breakfast time probably honey or maple syrup to satisfy the sweet tooth that starts yelling about day three of a longer event :haha: course if trekking a simple warm fruit compote of sorts from a medly of dried fruits will satisfy the sweet tooth and is just plain good to enjoy of a colder evening

Never thought about the season all, haven't ever used it,have to have a test at home. :hmm:

Spices by the time of the F&I were pretty numerous, so even if you kept to HC spices, you'd have a good variety.

Checking the VA Gazette you can find advertisements for alspice, anchovies [anybody for Caesar salad dressing?], black and long pepper [long pepper? cayenne?], cinnamon, cloves, ginger, liquorice, loaf sugar, lump sugar, mace, mustard, nutmegs, orange chips, red vinegar, salt, turmeric, and white vinegar, ..., to spot just a few.

I like salt and red pepper, mustard, nutmeg, cloves, and curry powder for the historic tastes, and a modern Hispanic product known as Adobo and also cumin as one of the folks I normally host in my camp has damaged taste buds, and she can taste cumin ..., since nobody is taste testing for authenticity anyway, ..., unless there is a cooking contest or something. :haha:

Spicewood berries grow wild and will take the gamey taste out of most things. Dry them and then pulverize and sprinkle on steak or make cuts in roasts and put in like cloves. Sassafras (file) to thicken stews and gumbos, same thing dry the bark and pulverize. Caution here though, Drs. say sassafras will raise BP :shocked2: ...

aren't most of us older types on BP medications as it is?

I doubt the stuff can get past the crestor and plavix I am on.
Crestor and Plavix do nothing for BP....

One of my primary uses for my smart phone is to maintain a file of my medications and dosages. :shake:
