I had some 3oz veg tan in the box, so I thought I would try my hand at another Lyman pouch. I have not dyed any leather before so it was a first time for that, I’m kind of pleased with the results.
I really like that you kept the corners as rounded as you did. I see way to many little belt pouches being called a "Lyman" pouch/bag that the make just clipped the corners. The original has such nice round corners and flowing lines.I dyed it with Feibings. As for the stitching sometimes I use one of those eight pronged stitch chisels. This one was all done with an awl one hole at a time. I will admit I kind of rushed the job, don’t really know why. Probably because I got tired of looking at it amd wanted it off my workbench!
Repetition is the key. Awl at same angle to the work, same needle in same location and order of the awl pierce every time, even the elbow needs to be at the same height and angle every time. Takes a lot of repetition to get that type of repetition : )Getting there.
When you saddle stitch, do you always cross your threads in the same direction?
Depending on which way the diamond awl holes line up,
this way, //////// or this way \\\\\\\ in relation to the direction you are stitching, determines which side goes above or below each time.
I'm terrible at describing it in writing (obviously) but @Artificer can describe it pretty well, and has in the past if you search his posts/replies. He also has a good link/s to some YouTube videos that describe it well.
If you can do this it will straighten up your line of stitch.
Maybe @Capt. Jas. can describe it here also.
