Up for sale is a 50 caliber Hawken-style percussion rifle. Gun has a 32.5-inch barrel, straight octagon, 1 1/8 across the flats. A tight-fitted jag on my rod says the twist is around 1:58. Given the barrel dimensions, this is a hefty bit of iron, on my scale at 11 pounds and 5 ounces. Overall length is 50 inches, LOP is 14. Like the robust barrel, the ramrod is 7/16 and tipped with a 10-32 threaded end. Flash channel is clear and snail looks great, with sharp threads in 1/4X28 for a common nipple.
Bore is pristine, lock is crisp and set triggers work correctly. An iron-mounted gun, all metal parts are browned to match the barrel. Wedge pins fit securely, but tap out easily to lift the barrel with a hooked breech. Stock has a couple bumps on the side panel. There's a small crack behind the entry pipe. It looks like the crack happened during the build and glue from the repair stained a slightly different shade than the surrounding wood. The end of the forestock and tang have been bedded with acraglass (or something similar.)
I am saying semi-custom as the gun is extremely well executed, with excellent metal to wood fit and very nicely shaped stock. No parts have any identifying marks, except the top flat is marked Cache Valley Guns LTD. Several searches and I could not find any information on a shop by that name. I'm guessing it went defunct 30 or more years ago, and likely a small number of guns by this maker. The greenish cast to the finish tells me the gun came out of the 60's or early 70's.
Asking $750 shipped in the US. Money order or personal check preferred. PM for details.
