Sending barrels to Mr. Hoyt

What is the protocol? Does the breech plug have to be removed for the work to be performed? If so do you remove before sending? I am planning to have a .50 octogon CVA barrel bored smooth, hopefully to .62/20 gauge. I know he is a busy man and was not taking work for a while. Can someone please give a detailed chain of events to make this happen. Thanks

.62/20 sounds like a stretch.

How wide is your barrel.

15/16 if .62 would be to much .56 or .58 would be acceptable

He won’t bore it bigger than the breechplug. That’s the max. The barrel needs to have a shoulder.

I have sent him barrels with plugs and with out. Doesn't seem to make any difference him.

I have had 5 done and 2 in works. Remove underribs and sights. Breech plug in.

I have had 1" Renegade barrels bored to 58 & 54. Currently two Hawken 15/16 going to 54 cal.

Don't know how long and how much he charges for CVA. For T/C he has been charging $150 for rebore, barrel cut and starter dovetail at muzzle and $50 for return shipping. He has always sent it back priority.

Again, call is the best advice.

As an aside, bored out to 58 cal doesn't leave much (.097") of a shoulder at the bottom of the grooves when he rifles with .010 deep grooves for a t/c 11/16" breech plug.

Additionally, barrel wall thickness might be an issue, so previous sound advice to call with your specifics will tell you what he can and will do and more importantly what he won't.

I called him Friday for a renegade rebore and he said he is turning tc barrels around in a few weeks. Sent mine out today with a note and phone number.

Call him. Seems there was a time when he wouldn't work on CVA due to the breach set up. If you pull the plug yourself, take your time cuz it's easy break stuff.

He also told me to strip of as much as possible . I sent it bare with the breech plug.

Don’t attempt to pull the plug on a CVA percussion barrel! Wasn’t meant to be disassembled. The drum is integrated into the plug and trying to get it - plug and drum - all back together and properly aligned is a bear to say the least.
