Serial numbers on my rem. 1858?

Hey guys! I just got my second original remington 1858. Not sure if i might keep or sell it since they're too expensive really for keeping a few of them. But i wonder about the serial numbers on them.

The one i got yesterday got the numbers
48686 on the barrel.
The one i had for a while got
92963

I wonder if there is any database or anything with information on them about previews owners etc? I mean would be cool to know if they have at some point been used in war by any soldiers or not etc...whatever i could find out would be interesting.

I tried searching myself on google etc but can't really find anything. I'm at sweden tho and have been buying them in sweden but if i got it right they have been imported from US pretty recently i guess.

Here are some pictures of them. The darker colored one is the one i got yesterday. Both work tho i tried it yesterday.

I can't answer your question Crypt0, but it my experience that there is a forum for everything and wouldn't surprise me if there was one on Remington cap pistols.

The only source that I am aware of is the "Springfield Research Service serial numbers of U S Martial Arms". I've got an old 1999 edition of their listings which includes Remington New Model Army pistols. Neither of your serial numbers are listed, although 48610 and 48682 were issued on 03 02 1864 to Company H 19th New York Volunteer Cavalry. Both your pistols seem to be tight and in nice shape, although the one has replaced grips and probably the screws. After inspection, both would PROBABLY be "good shooters"

How easily are you able to find and buy these original revolvers in Sweden?

The 48686 Remmie was built in Dec. 1863. The 92963 one was built Sept. 1864. This is according to the 'Remington Army and Navy Revolvers' book by Donald Ware.

Thanks man! From what that guy who sold them to me told...he said the 48686(dark colored) one were made in 1863 but i don't have any other information about it. Thanks for information! Yeah i tried them both they work fine! Kinda concerned tho about not being able to remove the nipples on then darker one. Maybe some guy with more expirience then i got could do that. In case needed.

Pretty easy since these are the only legal ones to own in sweden. The replicas aren't legal to own here only original ones so i know a couple sellers who sell original bp guns!

Thanks man and that's right i heard from the seller the 48686 one was builr in 1863. Didn't know about the 92963 one tho!

Is there any more information on who they were built for? Like what company or if they were manifuctured for the army etc?

The serial number also is shown under the left grip stamped on the grip frame. Mine is # 70,000 and has the cartouche stamp on the left grip as well so I know that it was at least accepted by the Army. Join the Remington forum might be a suggestion.

Interesting could you please show what you mean with cartouche stamp i would like to know If mine were accepted in army. Didn't have a clue about that i'm new to BP revolvers.

Okay btw i found out what you mean by "cartouche stamp" i checked it up! No need to show. Mine didn't get these but i'm not sure if the grips on mine are original or not.

I actually wonder about a thing. On the silver one i got 2 letters. One is in front of the cylinder back on the barrel. It's the letter "C"

And behind the cylinder on the frame above the grip i got the letter "W"

Also it got the letters "R" in same place on left side in front of cylinder on the barrel and another "R" a bit longer out on barrel

Also there is a "S" in front of the charger arm in the last picture.

I would like to know what they mean. I will try to get a picture and show you guys what i mean. I'm bad at explaining.

Nice dude thanks. I got no papers like that on mine. Are the bullets 451-454 or 457 on that one? Seems like the darker one got 457 and the silver one got 457 but i could shoot with 454 so i tried it.

The Remington Society of American is a forum for all things Remington. There is a section for pre 1888 hand guns.
I have a NMA from the 1860’s they helped date it. Unfortunately it had been buried for a number of years I’m in the process of restoring it but it will never be more than a wall hanger.
