Hi Everyone
I'm fairly new here .I joined about 4 months ago. I'm just wondering if any of you have seen the Sharp's Rifles series? It was produced in the early 90's and 16 episodes were made. The last one in 2006. Netflix has them all. The guns (Baker rifles I think) seem to be correct for the time. I have seen only the first one and intend to see the rest. It's a gritty brutal show and great fun. n.h.schmidt

I have all except the last one on DVD. The last one was a dramatization of "Sharpes Fortress" and the screen writer had to do a little gynastics to place the story later in Sharpe's life from a story that took place before "Sharpe's Rifles". Great stuff!

If you can find them, get the books. Watch the movies first. The books are better than the movies. As with most movie stuff, the movies are only vaugley like the books.

Thanks Mike
I have read one of the books. I think it was the second one in the series. The one where he is in India and made an officer. All the books can be had new .My town library has them too. n.h.schmidt

i saw most of them years ago. now working my way through them again on net flex

I happen to have been a Bernard Cornwell fan for years, even before the BBC series. He does his research as an author & usually notes in the after-word where he has deviated. I also enjoyed the series even though budget constraints really limited how closely they could follow the stories. The videos also introduces some major errors for those who have read his books. Overall though it is enjoyable but the books are even better.
BTW: Sharpe's son fights in the American Civil War if you read his Starbuck Chronicles.

My favorite thing about Cornwell's Sharp's Rifles
is the way at the end of the book he tells the actual history of the battle. The movies are very good but due to the limitations some of them do not resemble the books!

Check out The Sharpe Appreciation Society website at www.southessex.co.uk. They have a section that describes the weapons. That volley gun is something. The books and the movies are great but I found the books to be better. Cornwell writes a great battle.

Its some fine FINE entertainment for shure, I must have watched each on a hundred times..

My lady even bough me sharpes sword from discriminating general a few years ago...

Alot of draw filing later its still unwealdy as heck, but sturdy and really purdy.

I enjoy listening to the books on tape or CD while I am commuting to and from work. My favorite narrator is Patrick Tull. I feel he gets the accents and inflections pretty good. It's kind of dangerous though. You can get really caught up in the story! My son got me an MP3 player for xmas and I've been loading the CDs on it to listen to where ever I want.
