Shipping Blackpowder and caps?

I’m going on a hunting trip to Maui in late June and have decided to hunt with a muzzleloader partly because of their local laws and having to check my gun with local police. I wondering for those who have hunted internationally, how have you gotten your powder and caps to where you’re going? There’s a local FFL on the island I’m friends with and can ship it to but my problem is how? I’d rather not have to buy a full 1LB only to fill my rifle plus a few speed loaders. Then there’s the issue of caps and how expensive they’re and how I’d only need a few while there. I know I could just buy the powder and caps and ship it directly to the FFL but it seems so wasteful as I won’t be able to bring it back. I’d rather ship 400 grains of BP in speed loaders with the caps in a separate speed loader in a tiny package and possibly save some money. Then I wouldn’t feel too bad about just pouring it out before I left.

Unfortunately I can't help solve your dilemma. It certainly is a shame that a US citizen of one state has to jump through hoops and ask these questions to try to figure out how to legally do this merely to hunt in another state. These are very sad times for us. I hope you find a workable solution.

Unless things changed, you have to check ANY gun in Hawaii, even muzzleloading ones. My aunt’s husband was stationed there, he had to register an original percussion shotgun. That was the 1970’s.

I thought I might be able to save some money avoiding buying a full tin of caps and 1lb of black powder plus the hazmat fees for both. All just to use a couple speed loaders worth and have to leave the rest on the island.

Its not a huge outlay of money, its easier and that is worth something, Use the rest at the target range on the way to the airport.

If you can afford to go on a hunting trip to Maui, you can afford the shipping fees. Donate the rest to a club and be remembered as a nice guy from the mainland.

It’s not like what you think. It’s all a diy hunt on some properties because we have connections with a taxidermist there. We’re using mopeds and sleeping in tents the whole time. Most expensive part of the whole trip is going to be the flight. We may rent some gear to tackle and spear fish while there if we have enough time. I’m just trying to save money where it’s possible I know it’s not that big of a deal it just feels wasteful.

We’ve looked into guided hunts there before and it’s like $4,500 to shoot a buck of an extremely invasive species that does untold damage to local farms and the natural ecosystem there. It’s just too outrageous for us to pay for that.

In a few years you’ll look back and be happy you did. May be your friend will keep it for you if ever get back or help a fellow hunter. I have no other suggestions as to how to ship it without spending money.

Also, you may want to double check the “mountain goat” situation in Maui as I am pretty certain that there is no such animal in HI, but Spanish feral goats! Big difference, but I might be wrong. Good luck and happy hunting!!!

Yup you’re totally right about the goats I misspoke. They’re just feral goats that live in the mountains there. There are also hogs but you do need a special permit to hunt those. I will probably just end up taking your advice for the powder and caps.
