Sorry......I do not mean the flap, I meant the front of the bag after you lift the flap up. Just 'lower' the top edge by cutting it down by about 1/2" or so in the middle tapering to nothing at either side. Much more easy to use that way. The flap is fine.

I checked out a book from the library called "The Leatherworking Handbook" by valerie michael and the illustrations are very good. I havent done much reading as the pictures speak for themselves but the workmanship of their projects are really top shelf stuff. it really gives me a direction in which i want to go.
my advice is to look at the best and then attempt to replicate it as best you can.
the proper leather is crucial. I am currently building a bag from the same hide i have had for a while and i wish it was thicker. Using a lining has helped reinforce it so im gonna go with it...
your mock up is good... it would be great with thicker skins. i look forward to seeing what you make.

Great advice...thats what I do. And it doesn't hurt to ask questions of those you are attempting to copy! I know I have.

As to leather types, I always use 3 oz veg tan and it seems to hold us really well. Plus its a lot lighter to carry and easier to work than that thicker stuff.

just my .02 cents!
