Does anyone have a source for a nice wooden shooting/range box. I'm not a carpenter so that's out. Dixie Gun Works has several listed but they are a bit pricey. I think I can do better elsewhere.

One need not be a carpenter to make a simple box. Four sides with a flap top is easy to make. The bottom is also simple, but you can make this into a particularly nice item by extending it a bit and cutting a couple of half moons to act as long gun stands when the box is used as a rest. A ramrod notch, shortstarter, knife slot and ball groove are also simple features that make range loading convenient.

If I can do this, surely anyone can. If not, then maybe a friend with a table saw and drill can assist.

$19.96 for a 16" wood tool box at Lowes. You can't buy the materials for that. Curse those handy Chinese.

My wife just bought one as a gift for me last week that looks very similar to the one pictured, but made as a shooting box. It includes the padded uprights to hold a gun for cleaning ect.
She paid about $30.00 and it looks pretty nice. If you would like more info and some pics let me know.

Regards, Dave

I think she said it came from someplace called LTD Commodities or something like that, I'll get the right info.

I guess I should add that I replaced the bottom piece in the drawer and on the shelf on the inside. They had used some Masonite there and it kinda of bugged me so I went to our local Woodcrafters store and bought a nice piece of poplar that was already planed to the right thickness (I think it cost about $6.00) and replaced the Masonite. It looks 100% better to me and is much better quality wise.

Regards, Dave

Tip Curtis had a lovely one when I visited him July last year. Maybe it's a standard line. I took a photo of it to make my own on my return to New Zealand. Still on the 'to do' list..... :rotf: :yakyak:

MM,
That box looks just like my old $400.00 Gershwien that I was "awarded" some time ago in my toolmaking days. (spitting immage too!)
And yes! It now serves as my flytying bench box!
