While I know that most of the discussion is about building muzzleloaders, I'm looking for ideas or plans for Shooting Boxes.
I seen every kind of container imaginable used to carry 'stuff' to the loading bench. Everyone seems to have a better idea or at least a system of some sort.
I would appreciate some of your solutions.
Thanks

To carry my stuff to the shooting bench I make several trips.
To carry my stuff to the range I use a pickup truck.
Sorry, not much help. How about a tackle box from Wally World?
Get one twice as big as you THINK you need.

I made one years ago out of pine. It has metal corner protectors on all eight corners. I made a tray that fits on top and lifts out. It is tall enough a can of powder fits in the bottom. The problem is when full it is heavier than hell.
I saw Cabela's advertising a nice looking box specific to MLers. Look at that.

I am a cheapskate. I picked up a small, old, hardsided suitcase, which holds a tackle-type box which holds almost all my stuff. The suitcase also holds a spotting scope, a water bottle, and some target rolled up. No doubt about it, all that stuff gets heavy.
I am a cheapskate. I bought for a couple bucks at a garage sale a wheeled golf bag tote-arounder (whatever it's called). A bit of modification with a hunk of plywood on the bottom and I can put all kinds of stuff on it and wheel it about instead of lug it around. Even then I carry my rifle by hand to keep it from any accidental flopping off the cart. Hard to shoot with a broken rifle AND tears in your eyes.

I use one of the new, pretty large, tool boxes...that's not quite true: I have 3 of them..one for m-l shotgun, one for rifle (flint and cap) one for pistol...not the pistol itself, just the support stuff...stapler, et c. The pistols travel in a big old fancy attache case lined with foam rubber..holds balls, nipple wrench, powder flask...I use a boat bag to tote powder horn and bullet bag if I'm shooting rifle, and my scope and tripod come in a case with shoulder strap...it takes me two trips from vehicle to range bench, unless I'm parked far enough away to make a "lazy man's load" make sense...
The idea of wheeled tote makes sense..I may start doing that..Hank

heck if going to build one put wheels on the bottom and incorporate a rifle rack ...could even rig a spotting scope, a couple tubes for range rods...call it a mule! :) :redthumb:

a horse and wagon might work ::seriously most of the sass shooters i've seen use a modified garden cart(addon gun rack) :hmm: the large bicycle tires make it easy to load and move around

i have an old machincinst die makers box with a bunch of drawers in it....................bob

I picked up a Stanley Mobile Workcenter toolbax at Wally World. It has lift out tray in the top section, with a fairly deep well under the tray. It also has little bins for smaller stuff. The top box sits on the roller base, which has a well about 10 inches deep for the bigger stuff.
On top there is a fold down handle for pulling the box around.
Holds about everything I can think of and works pretty well for me, if not even close to PC. It helps that it cost less than $30.00.

Thanks for your thought so far.
I also have a different box for each of the firearms I use, with a separate, old & now broken tool box for the spotting scope, rods and universal mounting clamp along with a few common extras. All of the stuff does get heavy - too heavy. Like most older guys, I have a bad back. Several short trips carring light loads is easier than one trip with a everything. I have a 'moving cart' for some of the longer treks from the parking lot or between shooting positions. [Like Friendship & Camp Perry]
And like most of the older guys, I am satisified (sort of . . .) with the guns that I shoot and I'm into collecting bits of the finer accessories. And a fine looking shooting box to replace the RC Cola crate is the next thing.
How 'bout a pattern or two? I found an article for a shooting box on the internet at "Muzzle Blasts Online", but it was more of a history lesson about what someone used 100 years ago.
Every time I see one for sale that I like, I'm not packin' enough money, or I'm not willing to pay the asking price.
Thanks again and keep sending the suggestions.

Being a cheapskate does not seem to help this problem IMO. I've tried all kinds of "stuff", and I still end with a pick-up truck loaded down for the range.
I have a large tool box for each caliber, a case for the chronograph, a case for ear-muffs..targets and stapler, a case for the Spotting Scope, and a tube for the range rods.
If I only take one rifle, I'm still stuck w/five items.

Life was good when I only owned a Rifle, a Posssibles Bag, and a old beat up Powder Horn.

I think it all has to do with the pick-up truck! If it ain't full till it's squattin, it can't make it to the range...or so it seems.
What have we got ourselves into? :nono:

Russ

I only take this box when I go to a rondevoux but it holds everything I might need. It's a re-creation of an old Winchester ammo box. I stained it and added a handle on top. The tray lifts out and there is ample room below for
everything else.

Very nice work! :applause: :master:I'll bet those finger joints on the corners were fun. :p

I've been doing it that way since 1979 or so. I walk 600 yards to my shooting spot on the back hill. If it doesn't fit in my shooting bag or pockets it stays home.

Lowe's has all kinds of carry & tool boxes. Last I knew they carried a wood one for $19.99 that looked a bit better than the old Plano tackle boxes.
