Does anybody have plans, or know of a link to plans, for a shooting/range box?

Short story long, I've tried over the years to get away from just buying gifts for my grand kids and lean more toward providing some sort of gift/experience. So, in keeping with that effort I want to give one of my grand kids a set of plans and the materials to build his own range/shooting box. He is smart and focused, but even so I'll do the project with him.

I can probably draw something up but I'm not the best at that sort of thing so a set of plans would be a big help.

Anybody have any plans, ideas or suggestions?

Is this going to be for one gun, or several guns? Flintlock, percussion or both? I didn't build my shooting box but there are a few things I think I could suggest.

Can't help you with plans marmotslayer, but have to comment on your idea. I think it's a great one.

The time shared in a build like that will likely be one of the most valued and memorable gifts your grandchild will ever receive.

Make sure you both sign and date the box in a permanent way.

For a small kit, you might be able to use a classic old-style wooden tackle box. I believe Bass Pro and Cabela's offer this type of box (so you could get an idea of what it looks like). Generally the nicer ones come with durable brass corner fixtures and a leather handle. Over the years, there have been many do-it-yourself articles on this type of project...so should be easy to find a set of plans online someplace in the fishing/hunting realm. Good luck and hope you can share the results with us :wink:

Mike, there are almost always pictures of shooting boxes for sale at the CLA website, www.longrifle.com
Maybe you can get a good idea that way.

David, semi, bear and Mike;

Thanks for those ideas and pointers. Have not looked at the CLA site yet but seems like a good idea.

I could just go get him a plastic tackle box like I use, but a lot of opportunity would be lost.

At this time, he has one gun. A percussion .45 caliber. He does however frequently shoot his brothers .36.

Guess I'm thinking it should be large enough to hold the inevitable accumulation that we all seem to have. :)

Dixie gun works has some wooden boxs in their catalog, might give you some ideas. You might want to contact NMLRA and see if they have any plans from back issues of Muzzle Blast. Muzzleloader magazine would be another place I'd contact to see if they ever ran an article on how to build one.

Some good info there. :thumbsup: Think I'll sit down with pencil and paper today. See what comes up.

Yes indeed...some of those fine boxes would serve me well. And the prices seem very fair alright.
