I would like to find plans for small shooting box, something that is easily carried to the range for a line shoot. I have made several but found them too heavy and bulky (great for storage though!) I did manage to make a smaller one for my 50 cal. gear but would still like something a bit smaller.

Any help you guys can send my way would be greatly appreciated.

:hatsoff: Sorry can't help you with any plans, but I gotta say you got some pretty nice boxes there as it is.
Soggy

:hmm: Hmmmmmm.........Bury the competition eh?

Gotta say I wouldn't mind totin' one of them boxes! I use one of those small cheap 4 drawer machinist wood tool chests I got off ebay.I got to say its pretty nice for an import and I paid less than I could have got the wood for to make it! 'Course its just fer plinkin' at the range, it don't go to rendezvous.

Stars and garters! I've heard of putting a rolled $5 bill in your sixth cylinder to bury you with, but I didn't know of anyone who lugged their own casket around. Got a burro for that kit?

My horn holds enough powder for 80 shots (including the priming) and my ball bag holds 60 balls, plus three in the ball block on my horn strap, five in the block on the back of the bag and seven on the inside if I'm doing a woods walk where I have to shoot on the run. I can put two six foot rolls of ticking in my hunting pouch, either pre lubed or dry, and a tin of Moose Snot for lube. Don't use a short starter. Wipe with spit on a piece of tick every tenth shot or so. Three flints in the bottom and . . . that's it for a trip to the range.

That's my range box. :haha: Even has a spare cleaning jag, an oiler bottle, two turnscrews, two vent picks, two flint knappers, a strip of leather to pull a stuck rammer or cut flint leathers, a folding knife, five more spare flints and a mainspring vise in case of dilemas.

Same gear I carry hunting. :winking:

Hey Mr.Fox,
At the Rate your gathering "stuff" you'll soon need a Cube Van to lugg it in.... :winking:

It sounds like you already know how to make them smaller. Why don't you just deside how small you want it - and make one?

We do this with recipes. You want less - cut the recipe in half, you want more - double it!

Gee Dale,
Your quite smart,It's a good thing you post the obvious or the rest of us would never think of something like that.... :shake:

making smaller? no problem! I was looking for new ideas, new design designs, etc.

Well, when the question is... "I would like to find plans for small shooting box, something that is easily carried to the range for a line shoot. I have made several but found them too heavy and bulky"

The obvious answer is, DUH! :shake:

Silver Fox,
Never Mind Dale he gives everyone the same welcome.I think someone regularily pees in his Cornflakes.

Nice wood working! I gotta disagree with you there kind sir. Id say go a tad bit bigger and add a seat and gun rest----take the entire thing to the range and youll have your own private shooting bench complete with storage! :winking:
How about modeling a wooden one from the existing plastic ones found at most sporting goods stores and add to it--IE--sliding drawers .

Understood. I didn't get that from your initial question. :v

How about we give Silver Fox a break? He's only been on the Forum about a month and we're not showing him our best side.

Greetings Siver Fox

I have used a machinest box since the early 80's it's now getting pretty rough from abuse over the years. There are several on E bay like the one link below. This would be a good choice if you can either find plans or try and mimmic this one somehow. By the looks of your work you could most likely handle a project like this one.

I have used mine and really like it. It has lots of drawers for all the things you need. And it is not so heavy or bulky that it is unweildy either. It is small enough that it only requires one hand to cart it around from place to place.

Well that is my idea for ya!

Here's an article and plans from the N.M.L.R.A. website on constructing an "old time" shooting box. Maybe something there you'll find helpful. I'm afraid it's B.P. Cartridge related, but it's a start.

Now, if you REALLY want to move a load of artillery . . .

My sincerest apologies.

I've found that plans for boxes don't really help. Each box I build get sized and layed out based on what is to go in it. There are a number of good wordworking books on building boxes in different styles but from your pictures you know all the basics. I'd recommend laying out what is to in the box and then play with different organizations of that stuff until you get to a layout that works the best and is the smallest.

Thanks for your input. Those pictures have given me some new ideas. I've already started to work on some plans. Thanks again.
