Shooting sticks

Actually I made them because the older I get the shakier I am, especially for off hand shooting.

I use shooting sticks similar to those posted by @Idaho Ron

Simple to make, field tested and effective.

The shooting sticks that I make are different than most. I make them out of dowel. I drill the ends and use arrow inserts and rubber arrow tips or the steel field points depending on how I amusing them. I added some Mole skin to keep them quiet

Then I drill the top of the sticks. I add sling swivels and a leather strap the swivels are epoxied in. I gave it some mole skin again to keep them quiet and for better grip.

The rifle rests on the leather. I don't like the rifle sitting on a hard spot to shoot from. I feel that the leather allows the rifle to recoil without outside input from the rest. Every shot is the same. I tested this with my air rifle. It is hold sensitive and the leather allows it to do its thing the same way every time.

When they are deployed I can adjust the height by leaning them back. I have three different sizes to choose from. Short for bench rest, medium for sitting on the ground, and tall for sitting in a blind or on my knees.

I just found two 3/4 square and 5 foot long sticks in the garden department. I planed the corners down and pointed one end and put on a bit of oil for good measure and use them without any connections besides my hand. Simple and works great for sighting in or test shots at my monthly shoot.

I used them considerably for buffalo matches at Friendship. Simple to make. Just screw two 1"X2" pieces of wood together. The bottom end can be cut at an angle to help bite into ground. A piece of leather or cloth laid over the cross can help protect the barrel or stock wood. Be advise, these matches require a lot of getting down and getting up. It is a young mans game. Some stand up matches are getting popular. That may be what BPD made his for.

They actually have cross stick matches at friendship now that you can sit in a chair or on a bucket and use longer cross sticks. thinking about trying to get back into it. I have an under hammer kit I never put together, a nice piece of walnut and still have both of my Redfield sights. Would just need a barrel and I could put a rifle together. Seriously thinking about doing it, I really miss shooting cross sticks but age and injuries have taken a toll.

Shooting sticks brings back memories of using them with 22s as a kid to pop prairie dogs at much farther distances than normally possible off hand or prone. Great fun.

Last year my club sanctioned cross sticks for the paper shoot, but you have to be 65 or older. I easily made that requirement and I borrowed a pair of sticks. Honestly, I felt like I was cheating! I won the cross stick match. This year, in September, I plan on having my own set.
