I guess I was spoiled in WA - I had local suppliers where I could get BP, flints and other shooting stuff - unfortunately, no where I have found in Waco,TX carries it.

Any ideas on local suppliers?

try Reb's trading post. He used to have some stuff and was about the only dealer around here who had bp gear on hand. He used t be in the phonebook, but i havent dealt with him in years. He was in Robinson at the time. If that fails, or you dont mind waiting a little while, Chandlers Gun Shop will order the gear you need. And i work out there in Valley Mills at Chandlers so I can save you a drive out there when your stuff comes in if you dont feel like driving. A couple of us out there love MLs but w dont keep them in stock. Wish we would, but you know how that goes. Call them at 772-0000 and ask for Mike or Alice, they know their stuff and can get you just about anything. If you decide to get powder through them, Mike and I will try to get in on it with you so we can all get a better price since it will make it a larger order.

Where do you go to shoot? Dont know many guys who are into BP around here.

Paul

Go along with lonegun's advise. I don't know where he is but just meeting with another ML in your area is a good thing. If no luck you may have to go to Dallas/Ft Worth and Cabellas or Bass Pro Shop. That should be only about an hour and a half each way but they both have lots of goodies to look at.
Hope you get some other spots from other forum members as we all have the need to know where to get supplies locally.
Fox :hatsoff:

Well, technically - I don't shoot yet! I will probably have a nice fowler in my hot little hands in a couple of weeks and then I will be shooting lots - if I can find a nice place - having moved from WA to TX in October and only now getting into BP after not shooting for 12 yrs is gonna take a bit more getting used to.

If you contact Goex( get their website off the links pages here under Member Resources at the top section of the index page) they can tell you the nearest dealer in BP. Then contact the dealer about the extras, like flint, local clubs, and ranges, where you can shoot your gu, and meet other BP shooters. They in turn can steer you to the smaller, part time dealers that cater to ML folks.

Paul's got the right idea!! I'll just put in my 2 cent's worth: Some of the larger shooting clubs/ranges have Black Powder Leagues. Maybe some of the sporting goods stores in your area would have some info on joining a range right under your nose, that might have one of these "Leagues".

That's how I first entered into competitive BP shooting...by showing-up to the League shoot. I tried to just watch, but the members wouldn't have any of that!! Before you could say anything, I was up on the line with a borrowed gun, powder, caps, etc. getting HOOKED on BP! Now I'm the one doing the "Hooking" :) .

And the members in the BP League will be more than happy to get you "Hooked-up", as we say here in NJ, with all of the available suppliers in the area. Or in on a powder purchase, for instance :) .

Welcome to the best Forum on the web. We're all here to help each other!

Good luck,

Dave

I'm in Killeen, also looking for other BP shooters. I shoot on the Fort Hood range on weekends, I am usually the ONLY traditional BP shooter.

Found powder at Bass Pro,but be prepared for a shock cuz' it's very expensive !

Ft Hood has a range open to public - being retired military getting on would not be a problem just wondering what the range is like?

Sorry about the mix up y'all. Here's a little background i should have thought to include above but nt being the brightest crayon in the box, didnt.

I am in Waco, TX. I am one of the instructors at the range/gunshop i gave contact info for. Most of our shooters are more interested in tactical type weapons, but some of us also have an interest in more primitive toys such as archery and MLs. You can see pics of the ranges we have at carlchandler.com. We do a lot of teaching but we also have a lot of people who just come out to practice and have a good time. It is a friendly family-type atmosphere and we have a lot of members who let each other shoot their weapons so there is no knowing what you will see when you come out. Just look up the site i mentioned and see what you think. Like i said earlier, we dont have BP supplies in stock, but we can get just about anything and oftentimes at a better price than you'd get at a lot of places i've seen around here. If you have any questions, message me, or call them. We're closed tomorrow for Mothers day, but there will be someone there again monday. Let me know if i can do anything.
