Can you shoot a right handed flintlock left handed?

I have known several cap lock shooters who shoot right handed guns left handed. But never a flintlock shooter. I was just wonderign if there is a reason why?

Thanks,
Foster From Flint

Increased risk of face burns. But there is a guy in our club that does it fairly regularly. With eye protection and a hat its probably not so bad.

I'm a lefty and used to shoot my R/H flint all the time. No big deal. FRJ

Sure, with eye protection it's not much of a big deal.
The detrement is with all the action going on in front of your face, it's distracting, but can be overcome with practice

Last spring rendezvous I was beaten on a trail walk by a man who had just had shoulder surgery. He is right handed and was shooting his flint left handed due to the surgery.!It can be done.

It really sucks! I tried for a couple years to shoot right handed flintlocks left handed.I finally gave up completley.I now have 3 lefty guns and love em!

Uncle Pig,
Check out Hershal House's DVD. At the end he shoots a RH flint, left handed.

Complaining righthanders should shoot some lefty guns wrong handed.

End of debate. End of discussion.

Check that. They complain worse than any lefthander that grew up shooting righty guns.

It's just not RIGHT, they'll tell you. You're dead WRONG if you expect a righthander to endure shooting a lefty gun. :rotf:

I've been shootin' a right handed flinter left handed for years, and never had a problem, the first 6 months I did have a slight flinch from the flash but after I learned to concentrate on the sights instead of the pan I don't even notice the flash any more.

Most of my flinters are right handed.

The only problem I've ever had with my face and eyes, was with a POS percussion Jukar. Blew cap fragments and gas in my face. A flinter will vent to the side , not towards you.

I can shoot either or right or left handed but left is natural. It seems a lot of left handers I know have that ability. It comes in handy still hunting.

No big deal here at all ... in fact NO PROBLEMO! While I always wear eye (prescription lenses) and ear protection, I have yet to get 'splashed' whilst shooting a RH'd flinter from the LH side. In fact, if anything, I got far more debris from cap guns of EITHER side!

But what do I know, as I only average 5-6 pounds of BP consumed every year ... and 6 of my 8 custom BP arms are RH stocks ... but only 1 is a flint rifle, with little to no cast, so shooting it causes me zero issues ...

Yeah you can. I am ambi-awkward my self (not ambidextrous) and I shoot my flintlock left handed all the time, not as good as I'd like but thats just me :rotf:

Sure! A guy in our club who is a lefty shoots right handers all the time. One of our mystery matches used to be shooting an aspirin at 25 yds wrong handed. I even won it once.

I don't have any problem. I routinely practice shooting left handed with all my hunting guns. Have taken several deer over the years including my biggest buck to date because I was able to flip the gun around and shoot wrong handed accurately....

I don't practice shooting left handed like I should. I've been in situations where I switched to left handed when hunting, but ended up not shooting that way. I'm left eye dominate and don't have any problems shooting that way, but holding the gun is a little awkward until I do it for a little while.

Only other thing to consider is if your gun has any cast in the stock. Not sure if this is an issue with M/L's. Cast is what they call angling the stock to the outside since your eye (where you aim) and your shoulder do not align. I once shot a box and a half of light trap loads through a used shotgun that I did not know was cast for a left-hand shooter. Beat me so bad the guys at work thought I had had oral surgery (swollen face). Just something that doesn't come up much with M/L's but, like I said, you never know.

I always, well almost always, put a cast off in the gun stocks I make, but these days always shoot left handed, weather they are left handed or right. I don't get beat up with either right or left handed gun, good architecture always works.
