I need to work up some turkey loads while small game season is in on some close by public land. I don't have my smoothbore finished yet and was wondering if I shot it while still in the white would the stock get scorched bad and have to do a lot of sanding to clean up before finishing.
Thanks for any advice

If it's a caplock,,, one of them collars around the nipple should save you some grief. If it's a flinter,,,,, errrr,,, if there is wood in the way it'll be burnt anyways.
But just for giggles, if you wet the wood and when semi- dry apply some RTV Silicone (HEAVILY) you'll do pretty good. Just peel it off after shooting. The wet wood stops the silicone from penetrating more than a "miniscule" amount and little is lost.
